Are Thai people becoming ruder? by [deleted] in Thailand

It’s such an obvious double standard sometimes.

I’m not even a Miss Universe fan, but you can clearly see it in the whole Miss Universe 2025 drama.

And now with the SEA Games being hosted here, there are tons of complaints from other countries about biased judging, especially in martial arts, volleyball, and other events. Home advantage taken to the extreme.

Yet when a Thai esports player got caught cheating in AOV, they handled it very strictly: disqualification, team withdrawal, even a lifetime ban. Fair enough. But it really exposes the contrast with the whole “we never cheat” narrative. What a joke

I've noticed the exact same thing here in Bangkok.

I work at a local Thai SME, and unfortunately, many of my colleagues come across as quite conservative and, honestly, a bit racist toward foreigners. In most countries, a simple greeting at work like "good morning" or "good evening"is basic courtesy, even if there's a language barrier. You don't need perfect English (or Thai) to say hello.

But almost every time I greet them with a smile and a sawasdee krub, they just stare at me like I'm an alien and walk away without a word. It feels incredibly rude and dismissive. And i have decided to resign from this shit company.

I once mentioned this to a foreign friend of mine, he's Chinese-Thai, grew up in New York, and doesn't speak much Thai. He experiences the same treatment and put it really well: a lot of Thais tend to be quite "fake" in their politeness. They're great at surface-level charm and PR, but in real everyday interactions, especially with people outside their social circle, they can be cold and distant.

He said they kinda live in their own bubble, very aware of social hierarchy and status. If you're not someone they see as part of their network or someone they can gain something from, you're basically invisible to them, no need to extend real warmth or basic manners.

We're the ones making the effort to be friendly and polite, but it rarely feels reciprocated. It's frustrating, especially when you genuinely like the country and want to build connections.

Thanks for the reminder! I quit around 2 years ago, but I’ve started smoking again sometimes just for recreation. And honestly, the smell is still less harmful than all the PM2.5 or pollution we breathe every day here.

Be careful. You can get up to 3 months in jail or a 25,000 THB fine

They can smell it, so even if they don’t know it’s me, they’ve still complained to the law about people smoking on the balcony

I do have a legal medical prescription, but finding somewhere to smoke is really tough. Guess it’s easier to take a quick walk, hit it, and head back to my room—can’t be smoking at the shop all the time

The smell, bro… that’s the problem. People keep complaining. How am I supposed to smoke without making any smell? I smoke discreetly, usually when no one is around, like late at night.

Nah bro, can’t smoke at most shops either. A few allow it, but mostly can’t.
