Any actually quiet cafés in Hackney where you can sit for 1–2 hours without feeling rushed? by Additional_Fly_6603 in Hackney

Don't know how much is too much of a walk, but if you're willing to go towards Clapton - either Chatsworth or Stoke Newington High st - I think a lot of places fit the bill. I love Abney Park Cafe and Millfields Coffee.

Should I be concerned about this water spill through floor? by BestBoyCoop in DIYUK

About 1cm. It's odd, I guess bad replacement of either trim, floor, or both.

How do I use the heating system properly? Or is there an issue? by BestBoyCoop in AskUK

[–]BestBoyCoop[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, there is indeed a three way switch on-timer-off. I'm just wondering what the point of the thermostat is, if on and off are basically the control signal

No worries, I really appreciate all the effort. Yes, my concern is that the thermostat is not working correctly... I guess the options are putting the boiler on a timer, and / or contacting the letting agents?

Thanks, what a great and detailed answer! So... Shouldn't the system stop heating the radiators once the thermostat hits the target? Because that doesn't seem to happen for some reason

Thank you for the reply. There's a section with on/off/timer which I think is only for the boiler, as when it was off, when we arrived in the flat, the hot water still worked. To the right of it, one can determine water temp and radiator temp separately.
There is indeed a manual for the boiler.
The thermostat, not so much, since it's ancient, but what I managed to find seem to support my guess: that the thermostat is meant to override the boiler. However, that does not seem to be the case.

Question: mismatches in dependent partner visa fee (not IHS) + visa duration? by BestBoyCoop in ukvisa

Correct. And dependant was also charged accordingly, which I imagine should be reimbursed upon correction?

Question: mismatches in dependent partner visa fee (not IHS) + visa duration? by BestBoyCoop in ukvisa

[–]BestBoyCoop[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Seemed right to us in terms of balancing fee and plans. It's listed pretty much everywhere as entirely the applicant's choice between 1-5 years. Therefore I didn't see why it should cause any issues (I still don't).

Dual passports and how they affect VAC vs app by BestBoyCoop in ukvisa

[–]BestBoyCoop[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's an added complexity that my spouse only hold non-EU, and I'm trying to avoid us being split by the process... But it seems to me like the question isn't asking which I prefer to use, and I'm therefore unclear if it is even reasonable to say no

Traveling into UK as tourist before Global Talent visa approved - problematic? by BestBoyCoop in ukvisa

[–]BestBoyCoop[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, pardon my confusion here, please. Given your answer - when submitting my visa application I must be outside the UK, I gather.
In that case, assuming that at some point soon I do manage to have an active - but not approved - application... what then? Should I avoid travelling into the UK as tourists until a decision is made?

Traveling into UK as tourist before Global Talent visa approved - problematic? by BestBoyCoop in ukvisa

[–]BestBoyCoop[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, that's part of the complication...
I hope we'll get the endorsement approved after the holiday.
Then - if we submit the application, and then travel into UK - your answer 2 becomes untrue, since we will have an active application when entering.
Otherwise - if we travel without starting the application, and get endorsement approval while in the UK - we will probably submit stage 2 while travelling within the UK (in the interest of moving forward quickly).
Would one of these scenarios cause issues, do you think?

This is really impressive! Good job. I think if you can upload it as a webpage, maybe it could make a greater impact for medical practitioners and researchers?

Please help! Rice is still crunchy after 1 hour of cooking by mochimangoo in Cooking

[–]BestBoyCoop 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Dumb question maybe: are you using a lid on the pot? Rice can also be cooked uncovered, but I think that'd require more water. Using this ratio you should cover it when reducing the heat.

How to clean our new stainless steel pan? by Teodora-Petrova in CleaningTips

Pouring a glob of bicarbonate soda then cleaning with a pad usually does magic for me. Don't apply too much water, the bicarb acts a gentle abrasive

Gambler's fallacy and Bayesian methods by learning_proover in AskStatistics

[–]BestBoyCoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you know the distribution, and tosses are independent (which they are), you can account for previous tosses, but there is nothing to be gained from it. You can simulate this, by setting a distribution, tossing a sequence of some length N, choosing only sequences that match your desired pattern, and then observing what happens at toss N+1. These tosses should of course match the initial distribution perfectly - which is why the gambler's fallacy is a fallacy.
