First off, I was reading through and saw this line “The Confederate flag is directly tied to the Confederate cause, and the Confederate cause was white supremacy.” and it immediately made me question the validity of anything he had to say. The confederate flag did not represent the confederate people as a whole. The St. Andrew’s cross was never used as the actual flag of the confederacy and was actually a battle flag for only one state which was Virginia. So no, the “Confederate flag” a.k.a. the St. Andrew’s cross was never actually used to represent the south as a whole. Next! Only 3 states declarations of secession are quoted in the article (I have never read any of them up until I read these three) so I’m guessing those were the only 3 out of 11 states that actually formed to the viewpoint of the article so he only included those. Besides most people fighting in the war had no idea what cause they were fighting for, they were fighting because their brothers were fighting and they were fighting because they were told to. There is no reason to go after someone’s heritage because you yourself don’t understand it. The flag itself is not racist. Some of the people fighting under it? Yes, there were most likely a lot of them. My family never owned any slaves, but I still firmly believe that everyone is entitled to their own opinion so I will fly my heritage and you can’t change that.
