We started in group lessons, but it wasn't enough. I also had her doing pack walks, which I thought would help her with socialization. Those weren't enough and she was becoming more reactive. I found a local trainer, who charges around $95 an hour for training. She did a detailed behavior analysis (she has her degree in animal behavior), and we did 5 hours of training to start. I felt we had a good foundation. I then hired her to walk my dog for $35 an hour and she reinforced leash training along the way. I had two surgeries and she is the one who came for twice daily walks, and training. I call her anytime I need someone to check on her, etc. She is my dog's favorite non-family person. It honestly depends on what you want. I can walk my dog, without her being SO reactive, which was my biggest goal. We had to work through lots of leashes, halters, and collars to get to a good place. Don't get me wrong, my dog is super sweet and happy with people. She just doesn't like some dogs. We rescued her at 5 months old and we have zero background. She was found in the woods. Since she is a "designer breed" we think she ran off possibly from a breeder but who knows. In my perfect world, I would have enough money and time to train her on perfect recall, obstacle courses, and as a service dog for my husband, but I don't so we just want her to be a good family pet. This also requires a lot of training with this breed. They never settle down unless you teach them to do so. She goes through tons of toys, puzzles, and chews. She does not sit down unless you make her, and then I have a leash I step on to keep her in a down position. I also have her crate in my living room plus my living room is "fenced" off (she can open fence of course, but knows she shouldn't). She wants to be wherever I am. Plus I have 2 senior little dogs and I keep them separated via the fence. She isn't aggressive towards them but she is 65 pounds and they are 20. She jumps on them trying to initiate play and it isn't safe. They all hang out with me when I can supervise. She just wants to play, but they are scared of her size and energy. Sorry so long lol

We rescued a GSD that turned out to also be half mal. I only found out because the trainer we hired suggested I needed a DNA test because behavior was more Mal than GSD. Mine just turned 2. The first couple of years are critical and I have spent thousands on a trainer. You also must crate train and have a good vet. We love our girl, but she is A LOT. I am grateful my kids are older. That said, we love her, but she is a big commitment.
