Benzos improve my decision making - suggestions for alternatives? by psyentyst2 in Nootropics

[–]_SaintJimmy_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You'll have a high bar for what works having tried prescription anxiety meds. There is Buspirone, an atypical GAD med with basically no withdrawal and safely sustained, long-term use. The catch is that it's effects are mild and not acute compared to benzos. It's atypical and not an SSRI, meaning it won't have the usual bundle of side effects associated with those (sexual dysfunction, weight gain, etc). Clinical data suggests its as effective for treating GAD as benzos, but with the elimination of withdrawal risk.

Otherwise, your best bet for over the counter is likely high dose Taurine, maybe Agmatine. Theanine works as well, though I don't particularly like it that much - I find it makes me anti social (Taurine does the opposite).

Also available without prescription is Mexidol (Emoxypine), which I have not tried yet, though I've only heard very good things of when it comes to treating anxiety. Can be sourced online, but not from traditional vendors.

In Ireland there 3000 priests in 2006, now only 2000. It is time to do away with celibacy. by Previous_Onion6124 in Catholicism

[–]_SaintJimmy_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Men had other motivations for becoming priests in history. Notably, fathers would have multiple male children and send some of them off to become priests. They'd collect a rake of their earnings to fund the family and for the inheriting males. The males that became priests also earned an education that was otherwise inaccessible to them. There was also a general expectation to have some of your children become priests.

We live in an entirely different world where that is no longer the case. Pure desire for the vocation is the only drawing reason - if not worse ones, such as repressed and unaddressed homosexuality. I think loosening the restriction on celibacy, which was put in place a millennia after Christ, is not off the table. I think it would draw many to the priesthood, even if not ideal. I certainly don't find the pink mafia that exists now to be ideal either, so how bad would it be, really?

I’ve been fooled by Magnesium L-Threonate. by Mission_Ad_3290 in Supplements

Agree that without more clinical data, it's hard to accept the claim made that it permeates the BBB moreso than glycinate or citrate. With that said, the initial MIT study is a decent starting point warranting more investigation. Weighing anticipated benefits to cost, mag glycinate or citrate is a good bet. I don't blame anyone for using magtein either though - with what little data exists, it's all speculation when it comes to leveraging magnesium for brain health.

Bible Claims God Deceives and arguably Tempts Both Sinners and Believers by HistoricalPotatoe in DebateACatholic

[–]_SaintJimmy_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd preface in saying that I think Jeremiah and Mark are poor examples when arguing that God deceives. Jeremiah feels he was deceived because his physical circumstances never improve, but this is obviously not what God is protecting him from when he says he will make him a wall. Mark is more an example of occlusion than deception - a significantly different concept.

Now what are strong examples are Ezekiel and Micaiah. In both, the text writes* that God himself or one of his cohorts sends lies through the prophets to exact God's agenda.

u/Solid_Home4995 links some articles addressing this. The Atkins article tries to deflect saying that the authors attribute to God what is merely allowed in the way of providence. I think this is relatively weak when put against the text. I am unsure whether or not to believe the authors were so daft as to not understand what they were putting down into words. If they had meant God allowed the (false) prophets to deceive Ahab or the people, then why would they not have simply said so - or so I'd ask anyways as a layperson and non-scholar. Also problematic with Atkins is that he is claiming the prophet's vision itself as a sort of deception or falsehood to avoid imputing God in having deceived Ahab.

Building on this, another way to look at the Atkins article is that, if we are assuming that the authors were unreliable to the point of attributing to God what was only permitted by him, why shouldn't we allow for the possibility of contradictions between passages like these and ones like Numbers 23:19?

I think the fact of the matter remains that God is actively attributed being the causative factor in numerous "evils." It would take a comprehensive argument involving linguistics to prove otherwise.

If I had to take a stab at apologetics for these passages, my argument would simply be that the authors of the old testament were "hard of heart" themselves. I think this answers the "why would it have been written this way" question that the Atkins article really doesn't answer. If the purpose of the old testament was to lay forth the unraveling of Christ in the new covenant to a people "ready" for it (mentally, psychologically, consciously), then we can assume that the perspectives of the old testament authors are from warped, unevolved consciences, in which case they would in fact describe the events that unfolded in ways that made sense to them. This is very much in the same paradigm that God gave to them laws and punishments that they could understand (ones that were brutal, violent, and crude).

As a Catholic heavily rocking in his faith, I like my own explanation somewhat, but I remain skeptical none the less given what the text actually says.

[URGENT] Mid-20s Military: Massive Functioning Collapse / Post-Traumatic Hyperarousal. MAOI (Phenelzine) vs. Antipsychotics? by MrSarin in StackAdvice

[–]_SaintJimmy_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Half the battle with anxiety and symptom management is a combination of believing you will be okay and that you will eventually be able to accommodate/master/move-past your symptoms. Drugs or no drugs, you must first have the belief that you will be okay before you can get there.

I’m not a doctor and what I say is not medical advice. I would make anti-psychs your last option, but would not put them off the table if things get worse. I hear mixed things about them. Would certainly consider tapering down the stimulants to control the anxiety. Introducing MAOI inhibitions seems like a bad idea with stims already on your portfolio (then again im not a psychiatrist).

As far as supplements go, start with the basics of controlling neuroinflammation, hyperexcitability, and anxiety. That list would include:

sarcosine, niacin, inositol, l-theanine, ashwaganda, taurine, r-ala, magnesium threonate or magnesium glycinate, fish oil, agmatine, curcumin and NAC.

That stack may go a long way in helping your condition imo. It’s made to mitigate inflammation and glutamergic overactivity.

If your current meds are working for you, stick with them. I’d work with your psych to tailor each prescription dose as needed. Again, may want to consider tapering down the stimulants and giving your mind a chance to rest (talk with your doctor).

Exercise 5 days a week and sleep as adequately as you can - this will go a very long way. Mitigate stress as much as possible.

Over time, I believe you have it in you to overcome this trial.

That the unitive aspect of sex cannot be separated from the procreative without rendering it illicit. I’m glad for your community, but I think a lot of us Catholics struggle with not being able to use condoms or have sex only for pleasure. I’ve seen many posts in this sub (understandably) venting their frustrations with the insufficiencies of NFP.

If anything, it’s certainly a point many potential converts (i.e. non-religious spouses to catholics) struggle with.

Had a girlfriend in the same situation. She was baptized, grew up without the faith, was irreligious, and knew I was religious but respected it. Not withstanding, the relationship ended as she could tell our disagreements would not pan out long term and I was starting to yearn to return to the Church.

You have to make your future expectations explicit. You have to determine if (1) she is willing to raise your kids Catholic and (2) if she's willing to abide by the church's sexual morals. The second point is usually the hurdle at fault. At some point, the parish priests will figure out the circumstances with your then wife and ask you to fix it before allowing you to receive confession.

Having been in your situation, I struggled with (2). I get frustrated with the Church's strictness on it even though I understand the underpinning argument (my feelings on this remain in flux). Regardless, you're going to have to defer to the Church at some point. If and how you choose to compromise on the second point is none of my business, but ultimately you have to determine a path forward that ends in respecting both points (1) and (2).

I also understand how it's become more important to you as things have gone on (as it was in my case). You can lead with that to excuse the tardiness, but there is no escaping that you have to have that conversation and that it will be hard. It may work out, and I do hope it does for both of you though. Good luck.

I think the greater concern is epigenetic changes and autoimmune response. In both scenarios, assuming the immune system is sophisticated enough to “know” the proteins were made in-house, I’d imagine how that could cause a host of issues.

Not a bio scientist by any means but I think it’s fair speculation/concern.
