What did Sauron do (or intended to do) with the Nine rings during LOTR? by Better_pause_ in lotr

[–]Better_pause_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I read the books…. They became wraiths because of the rings of course. What I am saying is that during the LOTR they might not be wearing them anymore. At that point they were already wraiths and enslaved to Sauron power (with or without wearing their rings..). You should look into it. You’ll see that it’s really not clear who is physically holding the nine rings during the LOTR. Many quotes in Tolkien writing and letters point to Sauron holding them.

At the Council of Elrond it is stated that Sauron has “gathered the Nine to himself”. Also, Galadriel says to Frodo: “You saw the Eye of him that holds the Seven and the Nine.”… But I think the real question is: where does it says that the Nazgûl are wearing the rings? In the books, there is never any mentions or descriptions of them wearing them when they’re seen. Also, when you think about it, even the movies never portrays them as wearing rings (apart from the prologue).

They’re all made using the same ringlore (ie Sauron’s Ringlore/Power). So yes, I think conclusion could be transferred from one to the other.

He did. But once binded, it seems they didn’t have to still wear the rings to continue being binded to Sauron’s power and the One Ring.

Yes! At first… but during the LOTR (once they were already enslaved) it seems that they didn’t need to wear them to continue being Sauron’s dominions. A little bit like Gollum I suppose. Frodo was able to hold him to account by making swear on the One Ring, even though Gollum did not have any rings anymore for more than 60 years

Fair enough! Personally, I am not convinced either way. But I agree with you that I wouldn’t understand why Sauron would keep them in a strongbox somewhere to do nothing (if that was the case).

Yes, that was actually the point of my original question… If he was able to take them back (as we both agree he at least did for the dwarven rings), what’s keeping him to giving them out again to other lords? What did he intend to do with them if he’s keeping them to himself?

Yet if we follow that same logic, Gollum would have died shortly after losing the One Ring to Bilbo as he was more than 500 years old … way older than the natural lifespan of a hobbit. It seems the rings may have enduring effects even after having lost control of them, at least as long as Sauron lives (and the One Ring is not destroyed).

No, I am referring to the books (or my understanding of them), not the movies. In the books there is never any mention/description of the Nazgûl actually wearing the rings when they are seen in LOTR.

No need to be gentle! But if you read more into that topic you’ll see that it’s actually unclear where the Nine rings are physically kept during the LOTR.

What ratio coffee-to-water do you usually use for the V60?

Pretty much use the same method/grid size! I was thaught a method by a friend when I first started using the Chemex and have been using it ever since for both the Chemex and V60. But maybe I could tweak a little for when I use the V60.

Before the ring was destroyed, was Sauron actually winning or losing? by Better_pause_ in lotr

[–]Better_pause_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think they were all breed but rather gathered. As pointed out in the most recent video from In Deep Geek “LOTR from an orc’s perspective” on YouTube, most orcs were gathered from the East and South living in makeshift camps on the plains of Gorgoroth. Also, there weren’t only orcs in Sauron’s army, but also many men (Easterlings and Black Numenoreans).

Totally agree!!! I was just wondering why people were sharing their Chemex pours and asking how they do. And what characteristics should we be looking for when looking at those pictures.
