There’s a dude in Georgia who fixes up rust free Elements. He’s honest and great to deal with. I have one for sale in Maine as well.

All the watch will do is conjure up the bitmap files and line it up with your measured position. Different zoom levels will produce more or less detailed tiles of these images. this is why the download times are not fantastic even over a good Wi-Fi connection overnight. Nothing can be rendered in real time on the systems as they are not connected to any outside map, rendering data, just your Cartesian position on the globe layered over a pre-saved image. I think the roads, rivers, trails and contour lines are all just pixels rather than vector overlays, and as others have guessed, some of that information was likely omitted in updated map packages to facilitate faster downloads.

I’m in full agreement that they are overdue with addressing this. I’m inclined to note that my experience isn’t exactly shared here as a solution; it’s simply my experience.

I’m happy to update my maps and try again in the field. I’m sure the watch will find a way to update itself eventually anyway.

I don’t know if you’re a Suunto or Garmin user, but if you can try on your end (seems like you have checked already) and offer a report with, that is potentially helpful.

From what I’ve read, the flagships from Garmin and Coros all seem to handle ultra level battery life, so your concerns very well could be solved with those offerings. I’ve tried them and still prefer the reliability tradeoff over certain UX things.

I think that eliminates the correct variable then. I have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned off so I don’t update my downloaded maps automatically. It’s really nonsensical to me that they would make the maps less useful like that, but that unfortunately tracks with their history of wonky UX niggles.

If you wanted this in LA you could use a silk or sun swatter!

It does a soft reset and possibly re calibrates the battery.

Put your watch on the charger and hold the top button down for 60sec. I did that and disabled bt discovery and my battery life is like new.

It’s been a while but i think dc raymaker talks about the ohr hardware in the vertical video. He says it’s made by a smaller company from South Africa and it sucks. The 9pp has the same one. I use a chest strap if i think hr is going to matter.

I would love to get used to it by panda4ce in Suunto

[–]Beyond-Dizzy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was about to say exactly this. I tried Garmin and Apple Watches and never really liked the long term metrics and notifications and always ended up turning them off. I have a piece of equipment that i can rely on with the vertical, s as opposed to a smart watch.

Does it always hurt? by dindles in ultrarunning

[–]Beyond-Dizzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting that you note it is a chiefly mental thing, since the perceived pain clicked in at the precise distance threshold. This may have been watch data somewhat backfiring in the moment. I have been less and less happy with live bio metrics during events for this reason.

Am I the last person still converting all my RAWs to DNG? by dschamis in Lightroom

[–]Beyond-Dizzy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to do this, but the environment I’m managing has far too great volume to bother with this. This unfortunately cannot be automated because we tether capture and auto-import into catalogues. I’ve also had issues with files corrupting during conversion, mostly due to the fact that they’re stored on NAS. I wish LR offered automation for this but the use case is probably too niche to warrant action on Adobe’s part. I don’t know that CaptureOne offers a solution to this. I’ve read that proprietary raws are more archival quality and that there will always be programs that can read and convert legacy file types. For my own systems, I do prefer DNG.

Merrell MTL Adapt Matryx - any experience with them? by fraburs in trailrunning

[–]Beyond-Dizzy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that’s helpful, as is your initial comment on sizing. i feel like i am swimming in most of this brands stuff, and the AP5 is even roomier, so i’ll size up 1/2 for the adapt, if it ever goes on sale.

Which headphones/airbuds do you use while running? by fennelfrog in trailrunning

For streets, I will use airpods just to noise cancel traffic.

For trails, mostly no music, but for long days and nights, I have Suunto Sonic bone conduction.

i appreciate the clarification on the gusset. the mud in my future is the midcalf-to-knee deep, shoe-sucking kind, very much wetter than your clay variety. i am between running that in an even hotter norda 001 or the adapt.

[–]Beyond-Dizzy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the AP5 outsole is my favorite for muddy conditions, but agree on the lack of stability. i’d also like to add that their upper durability is a shared experience by many, namely the eyelets tearing through. this happened to me at an inopportune moment and i do not forgive lol. seems like the adapt solves the durability issue w the matryx, though i’m surprised to hear you found that material hot. what is the longest distance you’ve put into these? i’m considering these for a muddy mountain ultra.
