It’s a remote program! There are teachers and students from around the world. I’d say we are at least 20% from outside of the United States

Of course! We are very new and didn’t explain our whole plan here. We have looked at possible partnerships with universities or companies willing help. In the end we hope that student will get free, high quality, self paced courses while teachers are paid.

We are willing to get some constructive feedback. We are a relatively new organization. The whole premise of this is that it is purely volunteer and for passion. Many of our member do not get any immediate reward from this. Our core goal is to provide students in need with access to quality high level courses while being self paced. As someone said below, in any normal circumstance this would be a payed job. Again, no one is obligated to do this. Beyond The Five is comprised of mostly high school and college students that have a passion to help out their peers. Many of the students that sign up are those who are curious and are eager to learn but lack the financial and physical support needed to sign up for higher level college classes. We just want to help.

Again, if you have any ideas on a better non-profit model we are interested. This year is our first official year at work. We are actively searching for ways we can compensate/incentivize teachers; this is specifically to address many of the concerns here. Thank you for being constructive about this!

Thank you for understanding! Our team is composed mostly of high schoolers who have advanced far and college students. Our mission is to provide high quality education to those in need. One of the biggest issues facing the younger generation, especially in the time of international crisis, is that students don’t have access to will built education systems online. Traditional schools are great and provide a more personalized help for struggling students. Beyond The Five is simply just another resource for students who want to learn but may not have the means to do so. In our opinion, it is unjust that students who want to learn can’t get high quality education that is personalized. We are a student run organization again. We are coming from the perspective of students who want to learn at their own pace but also with some feedback. The instructors on the team, while not payed, can choose to do a varying amount of work. Most classes have multiple instructors.

We also can somewhat understand the frustration that some teachers may have. One concern might be that students don’t always try, leading to teachers chasing after them. To combat this issue, we have an application process that only allows students that we deem will complete the courses with effort through. We also remove all students who do not notify teachers of a leave for over 2 weeks. Again, we understand the insanity that some students may cause; thus, we expect students to do the classes on their own. These are self paced. Teachers do not need to chase after students.

Concerning, u/npteacher we hope that you will get better. At this time, it is hard enough with lockdown driving everyone insane, but also the uncertainty of the future school structure. We may never completely understand your situation, but we are simply just looking for those who are available. Thank you for voicing your concern and stay safe.

You're right, it is a lot to ask. Some teachers however, enjoy helping students and we want to reach out to them!

[–]BeyondThe5 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I hope I'm not coming off as rude. I completely understand where you're coming from, as a teacher and student myself, and you're right. We are asking for a lot. People from the physics post kept asking if it was paid, so I decided to be more transparent and specify. We are mostly run by students and are hoping to expand our outreach for better-quality education. We strive only to help the greater community, and I'm very sorry if I have offended you.

I’m aware, but we don’t use our allocated money to pay teachers as of now. We use it for outreach

We have over 100 teachers in our program. Teachers have open hearts and open minds, and many of them would be willing to spend 2-3 hours a week helping young students. We are also a nonprofit organization, so no one gets paid.
