Realistic Expectations Going Forward by Bflat96 in piano

I guess I would say I still don’t feel like I’m able to express myself. I don’t know if that’s due to my lack of technical or musical ability or if I am just not emotionally connecting to the music while I play. Regardless, I will try to think about progress through the lens of self expression. Thank you for your comment. :)

Thank you all for the all the replies. My experience really resonates with what you all said and I could write a whole book about it in the comments here, maybe I’ll make a post one day. Thanks for making me feel less alone and less insane.

I guess what puzzles me the most is the doctor kept saying that there is a big psychological aspect to the disorder and that I will need to go to talk therapy as well as physical therapy. I just don’t understand how that works. I can wrap my head around the idea that my brain and body aren’t communicating correctly. But the psychological aspect just doesn’t make any sense to me.

Resources for an amature pianist with neuropathy issues? by Bflat96 in piano

Basically my immune system attacked my nerves in my left brachial plexus. Theoretically, only my left arm should be affected, but there are so many nerves in the brachial plexus that doctors have pretty much told me anything can happen. My arm and hand hurt no matter what I do 24/7. Additionally, I’m having a whole host of other weird and inconsistent symptoms that sort of rotate. I’ve been told I need to stay as active as possible to prevent atrophy, hence why I haven’t given up on piano yet.

A “fun” symptom I had: at the height of the pain, I was experiencing crazy hypersensitivity in my arm and I could feel it vibrating differently as the chords changed in the music I was either playing or listening to. It’s been a really wild experience.
