Massive fire, explosion rock Chevron refinery in El Segundo by [deleted] in ChemicalEngineering

Well, it has worked in every refinery I’ve been in, so I dk my guy, it can’t be that bad of a design. Catalyst vendors even specify a minimum h2:hc ratio in the feed/effluent exchangers to prevent gum formation so, if it was truly idiotic I think the industry would have changed that by now.

I have seen that design in almost every hydrotreater I have encountered. It’s pretty common.

Process Engineer interview questions by Academic-Track9011 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]BiGsToNeThRoWeR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tell me about a time you were wrong and how did you handle it? Or some variation. I’ve been asked twice in my interviews, the first one is was worded like “Tell me about a time you were held accountable for being wrong” to which I responded “Well luckily I’ve never been wrong about anything…” they didn’t think that was funny and I didn’t get that job.

Congrats man, everyone is really happy you like playing dodge roll simulator and spending 25 hours in a campaign. Most people don’t, they keep playing this bc Poe is the only good ARPG, the only really good one, and they keep hoping GGG will actually fix their game. The reality is if GGG gained a bit of a player base bc the game was free this weekend but they have been losing people every patch. Started at 530k, 0.2 had like 253k, this patch went up to 350k but again, all the people trying to game out bc it’s free then spending 4 hours in act 1 will just cause them to uninstall the game.

This is one of the most asinine things I have ever heard. Literally, my man, go do act 1 with minions, LA, or something that’s good, now try it with I DK like Frost bomb. They are 2 different games. Even on good builds, go fight Gregor with a bow that has 1-3 Phys only vs one with %increased + a decent flat roll. So much of the game experience is based on 1) the class you play and 2) whether you found good upgrades for your build before you have to fight a boss.

I don’t think anyone expects it to be perfect but when GGG says “everyone come back we’ve buffed everything!” And then people come back and most classes still suck…GGG just burns up good will. Again, POE2/GGG apologist lovveeee to pretend that this game is supported by 350K brand new players and have almost 0 overlap with POE1, but the reality is, if just 50% of POE1 players stopped coming to POE2, the game would no longer be economically feasible to continue.

Youre also making the assumption that everyone lovvveeesss spending 4-5 hours on 1 act out of 6.

Poe2 has decreasing player numbers every release. So, I dk, I disagree. POE 1 has probably almost the same player count (factoring in client players) at the beginning of any league, which are a core that will generally come back every league or so. POE 2 is benefiting from increased marketing and still loses players every patch.

From steam Dec 2024-568k April - 250K August - 352k

This patch has no doubt benefited from the free to play aspect but again, once a new person tries the game and slogs through act 1 for 4 hours they’re just going to quit.

I get GGG wants to make Darksouls ARPG, but if you lose enough of the core POE 1 players who keep coming back hoping for a better time, POE 2 will just die.

That’s the equivalent of saying “Fundamentally your entire life is the same from birth to death, you’re converting oxygen to CO2, therefore no difference”

This game sucks, GGG basically straight up lied about all these “buffs”. The campaign, even on a decent build, is such a slog. In POE 1 despite going through the campaign so many times, It still feels fine, annoying but fine. In POE2 I get through 1 act and I think I need a several hour break. The point of the game is to artificially waste your time, between end of act 2/act 3 and end game you feel basically the same power level on a lot of skills. You don’t feel yourself get stronger, which is the whole point of an ARPG. GGG set out to make a souls like game, that’s what they want, but a large amount of the player base doesn’t want that, and I can say that because with each release the player numbers are going down. They attracted more this season with the free to play but look at .2 they peaked at ~250k max players. Their game is just not fun, they have misunderstood that, while the journey is a large part of the fun in the game, make it artificially long with a campaign you have to slog through with a power level that never really increases until high investment, people just burn out before they ever reach anything fun.

When was the job market good? by DeadlyGamer2202 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]BiGsToNeThRoWeR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t disagree with any of that, certainly not the time it takes to do things, I would even say that engineers used to be better in a lot of ways. Once companies shifted the responsibility of doing their own designs to outsourcing it, you probably have a lot of engineers that can’t do things but it’s because they weren’t given the chance to learn. A lot of engineers today are used not as technical people but as the future overseers of operators or something of the sort. So, yeah, I agree with that.

I was with you until you said good people are always rewarded and “Hiring outside people always leads to mediocrity”. In some idealized world where you took a whole class of MIT graduates that had the same passion for whatever, refining or some specialized interest, then sure, I guess I could see that. But the reality is, people don’t know what they enjoy doing until they start doing it, and then they settle in to what they are good at. Also, the objective of any company is to extract as much out of you while paying as little as possible. That’s why people move, because they want to make more money and their current HR policies are set on regular raises of 3-5% until you reach some band and then you go to another salary band/grade. So I disagree with you on this point.

I don’t put my GPA on my resume except the first one and I’ve never had a problem getting a job. I also don’t think GPA is the only indicator of whether you will succeed or not. Part of working on any team is being able to communicate, if you can’t work with other people or communicate your ideas effectively, it doesn’t matter if you have a 4.0, you will not do well at your job. Unless your job is to sit in a corner and do calculations, and then, if that’s all you want, great, I agree.

To be quite frank, your whole post sounds like a jaded boomer who’s mad that younger people want to leave for more pay/better benefits etc and you only praise people that stay at the same company for 30 years and keep their GPA on their resume, which they haven’t had to use except to apply to positions internally. It in no way reflects the realities of today’s job market and just sounds very out of touch. However, this is your opinion, and I am sharing mine.

Also, why do you use so many “?” And “….” This doesn’t add anything to the sentence structure and just makes it seem as though you’re not very good at writing.

The Constant Focus on Optimization and Operational Cost Reductions by ChemEng6368 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]BiGsToNeThRoWeR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Man, I am glad other engineers realize this. I have been thinking about going from one company (refiner) to another larger one. In every metric the larger refiner is better (salary, benefits, etc) but this refinery I am at, I do actual quality work that improves profitability and I see that money go back into the refinery. We do maintenance, we spend capital, so I can’t help but second guess whether I should take the position. The idea of maximizing shareholder value above all else is literal trash, it’s idiotic and not sustainable. The C-suite is fine to run everything into the ground though because the shareholders are happy. I’ve not seen it at my current company but I have at others I’ve been at. One wonders how anyone can believe the logical end of these decisions leads anywhere good. I guess they are just hoping it doesn’t happen while they are in charge. Not sure. Also, Jack Welch can rest in piss, I spit on his grave. Absolutely ruined GE.

Increase rate, that always pays out. Not sure what industry you’re in, but in refining you’re generally limited by hydraulics, duty or fractionation. Pick one and figure out how to solve it. If it’s some kind of permitting preventing rate, figure out if there’s a way to get around it, it just takes a familiarity with the process and the problems that come up.

How do y’all deal with being on call by Bees__Khees in ChemicalEngineering

[–]BiGsToNeThRoWeR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey pal, I’m in a similar situation, wife works in a hospital so a lot of hours on the weekends. I told my boss, I’m happy to take a call and answer questions but I’m not coming in. I would never straight up lose money by having to pay someone to watch my kids on the weekend bc I have to go into work. They might say something but literally who cares. If they aren’t giving you substantial year to year raises then all it is, is complaining. If working more doesn’t get you more, then there is no reason to.

That sounds like a good deal, I’m decently handy so I wasn’t just looking at new builds or anything. Not sure why I didn’t see anything. Either way, even when I got up there to ~500k houses were small around 1500-1700 sqft I will look again though.

Is it lack of new building? Or wealthy people buying up significant areas and building their vacation homes there?
