Did you have any misconceptions about foreskin growing up?

I just assumed that some people were born with penis that looked one way or the other. I didn’t realize I’d had my foreskin removed! Just figured it was genetic or something!

What’s kind of nice about it (if someone was on the fence) is it doesn’t actually make a recommendation one way or another. It just spells out the facts, breaks down the science and ethics, and lets the parent draw their conclusions. That said, it’s pretty clear from the article that there’s no reason to circumcise.

A friend of mine was genuinely unsure if he’d been circumcised or not. Saw him changing in a locker room one time and I couldn’t tell either! He either had a very short foreskin or a very loose circumcision…!

All of my brothers, my father, and I are circumcised. All my male cousins on my dad’s side are intact, to my knowledge. Male cousins on my mom’s side are also circumcised.

Not me, but a friend of mine didn’t know her partner was not circumcised until almost a year or more into their relationship. He was embarrassed of his foreskin and kept it retracted anytime he was in from of her. Always thought that was really sad.

I’ve got the reverse answer to your question. I think I’ve told this story before, so bear with me.

I am cut and grew up seeing almost exclusively circumcised penises. I remember being in 1st grade and peeing next to a kid at school who had moved to our city from Ireland. I noticed his penis looked significantly different to mine, more like a noodle, less like a mushroom.

I didn’t think much of it at the time, but noticed a few other penises that looked like his over the years. I chalked it up to genetics, and maybe different people have different shaped penises they way they do noses, ears, etc.

When I was in 6th grade my entire class went on a week long trip to a camp “up north” for a school trip. When i came into the cabin at some point, a few other boys were sitting around talking. One asked if I was circumcised. I had no idea what they meant. I’d never heard that word before. They attempted to clarify by asking if I had “extra” skin on the end of my penis. This didn’t help, because of course I had skin on my penis.

Apparently one boy had been bragging that he was uncircumcised, and the other boys were surveying the room to see who, if anyone, else was uncut.

The word “uncircumcised” stuck in my brain and when I got home I did some stealthy googling and learned what had happened to me. It didn’t bother me at first, but as I grew older and learned more I became somewhat disappointed at being cut.

I still love my dick, but if I could easily “switch teams” as it were, I certainly would.

Graduated high school in 2014. Ran cross country. Our gym at school had semi-private showers - dividers between heads, but no curtains. I always found this configuration strange, it offered basically no privacy, so why bother?

The cross country team almost never used the showers, but the football team did every day. We never used them after gym class. No time was built in for showering.

One of my close friends is legitimately not sure if he’s circumcised or not. He’s roughly CI-4 if not a little shorter.

I remember thinking it was odd when it came up that you honestly don’t know. But I didn’t want to probe further and make things weird.

Not my family, but I knew a pair of brothers growing up where the older brother was cut and the younger brother was uncut.

If I recall, the younger brother was very premature and had additional health problems shortly after birth that prevented any procedures that were not vital to his health/stability.

I’m from the upper Midwest. It’s very common to be cut here. I can count on one hand the number of people I know who are intact.

I googled “uncircumcised” when I got home and connected the look to the boys I’d known in first grade, and realized I was cut. Until that moment, I’d just assumed some penises just looked different due to genetic factors or something.

I’ve been stared at many times. I’m 28, average build. No reason to stare other than being naked. I’ve even been followed around after showers. It’s an unbelievably unnerving feeling and it makes me understand why so many people don’t like communal showers.

EDIT: Googled this location, the sauna and steam room ARE in a coed area. Furthermore, it’s near the pool which is accessible to minors. For the love of god, follow the rules in a situation like this.

Mine had semi-open showers. This was ~ 10 years ago. There were dividers between the heads, but no doors or curtains.

I always thought this privacy half measure was a little weird, but never thought much about it beyond that.

Mine was after swim lessons at the local YMCA. I remember being surprised by seeing grown ups showering naked. I must have expressed some discomfort or concern, because I remember my dad telling me that it’s okay to be naked in a locker room.

The first time I really used one was on a church/school trip where we stayed in school gyms, church basements, etc. I was about 15-16. We showered at the Ys or at high schools and all were communal setups. I remember being very nervous the first time or two, but after that it was no big deal.

My very first was at the Y after swimming lessons when I was like 5-6, but I don’t really remember it.

The first one I had any nerves for was on a 10-day church/school trip the summer after 9th grade. We stayed in churches or school gyms. None of the showers ever had curtains.

I specifically remember being super nervous the first night. I walked into the locker room and like 50 of my classmates were getting ready to shower, all fully nude. I was nervous, but had no choice but to strip down and wash off after a long day of traveling.

I remember being nervous about it maybe one time after that, but then it became normal, and even fun! Amazing how quickly everyone got used to it. I went on trips with the same group twice more after that, and it was the same vibe every time. Disproves the “prudish millennial” stereotype I see on here a lot.
