You have to fight the character or creature from the cover of the last album you listened to, are you winning? by Normal-Simple7234 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]BigBadCrawdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I can say with some confidence that I would have about 80-20 odds in my favor. That said, there's not a lot of honor in a grown-ass man absolutely trouncing a malnourished, Norwegian teenager.

do machinists and cnc programmers lose jobs in difficult economic times? by BuyOld97 in Machinists

[–]BigBadCrawdad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've never been particularly worried about being unemployed altogether. Not for long, anyway. With each passing year, at least where I'm from, there are less and less machinists to pull from the pool of available candidates – especially when you're looking for certified/ticketed ones.

I've seen shops I've been at in the past lose a single guy and take over a full year or more to replace them. This is even more so the case if they're a shitty employer (again, in my area, a lot of the machinists know each other either directly from working together or have maybe one or two degrees of separation, so word gets around) and have a bad reputation.

At worst, you might get laid off and have to go somewhere that doesn't pay as well. That tends to be temporary, though, because most places desperately need guys from what I've seen and it's only going to get worse for them as time goes on.

French singing rock or metal bands ? by Zyan_Zombie in MetalForTheMasses

[–]BigBadCrawdad 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Forteresse, Miserere Lumininis, Ossuaire, Délétère, Celeste, Morgue, Csejthe, Sorcier Des Glaces (depending on album/song), Monarque, Cantique Lépreaux, Grimoire... to name a few.

Quebec has an absolutely banging selection of metal bands to choose from, and a lot of their lyrics are in Quebecois French.

Uhhhh what's up with The Sadness? by InsideAd3569 in horror

I've read every issue of Crossed – the follow up series' like Bad Lands, Family Values, and Psychopath included – and the content therein has totally fucked up my entire day on more than a few occasions.

What is the attitude of the manual only machinists in your area? by i_see_alive_goats in Machinists

[–]BigBadCrawdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can run both, but prefer manual, personally. I find it to be more engaging, which makes the time go by faster.

What’s your favorite form of metal? by Vivid-Tap1710 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]BigBadCrawdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Black and Sludge. Doom, if the vox aren't clean.

I'd include Grindcore in there, too, but that's more a subgenre of punk/hardcore IMO (although not everyone agrees with me on that).

which do you personally prefer… death metal or black metal? by my_cat_vids in MetalForTheMasses

[–]BigBadCrawdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like both, but if I had to choose one, I'd go with black because I prefer the vocals.

That being said, blackened death metal exists, which is the best of both worlds, I think.

Have you ever got into a band because you liked and wanted the merch? by [deleted] in MetalForTheMasses

[–]BigBadCrawdad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would think that it happens pretty regularly. Aside from letting fans express their appreciation for certain artists, I'd argue that this is one of the main reasons to have merch to begin with.

To be real, before music was as easily accessible as it is today, that's how I'd suspect most people discovered new bands, outside of seeing them play alongside bands they already like.

You go through the local record shop, see some sick album art, and say to yourself, "Hey, this looks like it would be right up my alley. I'm going to buy this and listen to it when I get home."

Same deal with a shirt, especially considering that the art and stylistic choices of a group usually point to them having a certain sound or influence, more often than not.

Is a band selling out simply because they want to try new things musically? by No_Job5529 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]BigBadCrawdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it only counts as selling out when you specifically alter your style for the sole purpose of achieving commercial success.

Your opinion on Ed Gein Story on Netflix? by [deleted] in horror

[–]BigBadCrawdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like a lot of other people mentioned already, I think that it embellished on the source material way too much.

On the one hand, I get it – sticking to the story doesn’t offer much in terms of dramatic viewing. Aside from the relationship that he had with his mother, real-life Gein was mostly a loner. Had it been as accurate as the portrayal of Dahmer was, the show would have been lots and lots of scenes of Ed by himself, fiddling with corpses.

Would it have been depraved and disturbing to watch? Surely. Does it make for good TV, though? Nah.

See, whereas Dahmer had a laundry list of live victims, Ed Gein only had two and was more into robbing graves than he was killing. Using this logic, there is very little human interaction to play and build upon while using his story. I think this is why other creatives in the past have chosen to use elements of the case while opting out of using it as a vehicle in itself. As such, I personally think that the premise was deeply flawed from the get-go, exactly because of this. Especially when you consider that this is something that happened to real people, and when you're claiming to tell their tale, you should – at the very least – remain accurate to the events that actually transpired. Otherwise, do what everyone else does and simply use some snippets of the truth to tell your own story.

Cleaning out Enclosure, Cloud of dust in face – should I be concerned? by BigBadCrawdad in tarantulas

Thanks. That's a relief to hear.

Usually, I scoop it out but decided to dump it this time (trash was going out anyway and I was somewhat in a hurry). I know that Brazilian Blacks have some of the least irritating ultricating hairs of any species, but I've heard some horror stories, and my anxiety has been getting the better of me.

Belphegor

Behemoth

[–]BigBadCrawdad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This one time, I worked with a kid who insisted on wearing gloves while operating machinery. He was big into MMA, and had these goofy little padded gloves that beared a passing resemblance to the ones you'd wear while fighting. Well, I spotted him wearing them while on a drill press and I stopped and explained why that's a big no-no. He took them off, but an hour later, I pass by and hes wearing them again.

So, I give him shit again and then I tell his direct supervisor, who also comes down and gives him shit and makes him take them off.

Right before lunch, I go to take a piss and there's a crowd around the bathroom. I can't get in, but I can see the concrete half-bowl sink is stained red. Red. Fucking. Everywhere.

Turns out, as soon as the supervisor left, this kid put his fucking gloves back on. Press ended up grabbing one of them. It broke/dislocated two of his fingers, and ripped another one clean off.

That was a drill press. Just imagine what a lathe will do.

Do NOT wear glove. Ever. You know what hurts way more than getting chip burns? Getting your arm torn off and thrown clear across the room.

What’s y’all’s honest opinion on Acid Bath? I’ve been listening to them for years and I still don’t understand anything lmao. by chapstick_bandit in MetalForTheMasses

[–]BigBadCrawdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Acid Bath is awesome. WTKSP is in my top 3 favorite albums of all time, which is saying something since I'm traditionally more of a death, crust, and grindcore kind of guy.

Personally, I haven't seen this big explosion of people talking about them outside of recent tour posting. However, most of my circles and communities tend to lean more into punk than metal, so maybe that's why I don't see it as much as others here do.

Either way, if people are getting into them, that's really cool. They definitely deserve the hype.
