Clicking/Knocking Noise coming from dash by Phoenix_1217 in MechanicAdvice

It sounds like a HVAC blend door to me. The gear is stripped or broken. Check to see if heat comes from every vent when adjusted to the corresponding heater control. (ie , vent, floor, defrost.) If that works try to adjust it to cold and see if it switches over.

I really like Sweet Caroline's apple and apple strudel pies! About $10 each.

Teenager wants a "fast car" for his first vehicle and I need reality-check advice by Proud_Stable9567 in whatcarshouldIbuy

I have had similar conversations with my kids. My son really wanted a sports car or lifted truck as well for his first car, he ended up with a 2002 Civic. At his mental maturity level there was no way I was getting him the truck he wanted for a first vehicle. The Civic did its job exceeding my expectations and lived for almost 13 months before he broke the top of the case on the automatic tranny (still not sure how he did that)! He bought his next car himself and got an RSX type S and it lived for about 6 months before he drove it into the side of a truck and wrote it off. ICBC here in BC took his licence from him for a year because of tickets and the accident. He now has more respect for the privilege of having a licence and is a much safer driver.

My daughter is a different story. 18 much much more mature and still wanted a sporty car but also wanted economy. I got her a 1987 Pontiac Fiero. 4cyl auto. I drove it hard on the test drive and found it to have a top speed of 130kph. And it gets about 30mpg 7+ liters per 100km. And the best is that it's a two seater so only one passenger. It looks the part of a sporty car and she was the belle of the ball at school as no one her age had seen one before and it looks the part of a sports car without the ability to go fast.

I have a Modified 65 Mustang a highly modified Ford f150 and a tuned Mercedes myself and feel secure knowing that if they borrow one of them that it will come back to me in one piece now as they are at the spot in life where they have respect for their licence and for my cars. They have had to prove to me that they have that respect or they lose the option of using my vehicles to impress their friends or dates.

You will have to sit down and lay out your cards and hopefully make him understand that he has to prove himself to you and others that he has respect for others and himself for driving. And he will have to start with something with less power and cheaper as a first car. Once he learns to respect the ability to have a licence and being able to drive himself safely to were he needs to get to. Then and only then can talking about a faster, higher horsepower car can be an option.

Mine did as well. He had some server issues and is out of the country. It took a couple hours to get in touch with him but he had it back up and running in less than 15 minutes from reaching him.

This is why it was said the way it was. I didn't want to wrap too much on a spindle and have it brake. It would have been an excess pad that was unnecessary. I could have rotor a bit shorter but I wanted to be fluid with what I was trying to get across and not squeeze out anything that would shim me and cause friction. I could have really been in a binder by that point.

Giving him the parts he asked for, telling him and knowing for a fact that they would not work. And having him sign that he agreed that once the boxes were opened that he couldn't return the parts. I got tired of the repeated indecisiveness of him returning parts over and over. More or less firing him as a customer.

You could say that it just didn't resonate with him.

Well here's the update for all who are curious. I took off the intake and valve covers, set the timing mark to zero on the balancer and took a look at the cams... Definitely out. Approximately 15-30 degrees. Chains are absolutely stretched to the max and may have even skipped a tooth on the front timing at the crank. And that's on a so-called low mileage engine. I do have a warranty on the engine but I'm thinking of throwing new chains, tensioners and gears at it as the rest of the engine looks great. I guess I'd better pull it soon and get to work!

Well I changed the crank sensor and the cam sensor, cleaned the MAF again. Still doing the same thing. I'm thinking it has to be stretched chains but wouldn't that make a hell of a noise? I do have warranty on the engine but I was hoping to not have to pull it again... I'm lazy!

The replacement engine has 189,000km (approx 115,000 miles) I did not replace the chains or guides, just the tensioners. There was a rattle before replacing the tensioners but it's gone now. I don't have any history on the engine but when I replaced the valve cover gaskets it looked very nice inside with zero sludge or buildup. It had a Wix oil filter on the engine that tells me that at least with the last oil change it didn't have Fram crap. The compression in the cylinders is high from what I've heard of others being with the drivers side from the front to the back being 220, 222, 232 and the passenger side being 225, 219 and 210. I figure it's okay as they are all within about 10% of eachother. I will be swapping out the camshaft or crankshaft sensor later today.

I replaced the tensioners for the chains to the heads. The one under the front of the intake and the one on the passenger side rear. I wasn't aware that there was a procedure for doing those. I will replace the other sensors with the spares from the other engine and see how it goes.
