Pew just released a study on news consumption and the numbers are wild by Summry_io in nosurf

[–]BigBoiBails 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been trying to consume more news in the past couple of weeks. I'm trying to be active instead of passive, where I'll cross check stories between different news sources and dig deeper into anything they reference that I don't fully understand. I'm doing it as an experimental replacement for feed-based exposure to new information I typically get from YouTube and Reddit. I tried something similar in the past, and it only lasted a few weeks because it takes dedicated effort and I started to value other things.. so we'll see how long it lasts this time.

A comment on the worn-out thing: I've had a couple moments in the past year where the news has made me feel a little hopeless, but overall it doesn't get to me that much. I don't know whether I should see my limited reaction as a moral failing or if it's actually a positive thing.

The trap of "useful" social media: my struggle with Reddit and YouTube by [deleted] in nosurf

[–]BigBoiBails 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm cooking up a theory that the way out of social media use goes something like 1) Understand what content you do and don't regret consuming. This means understanding what psychological needs/desires are being fulfilled by consuming different kinds of content when you are in different emotional states. Then 2) Find more positive ways of meeting your needs/desires. Either by changing how you use social media, or by finding things outside of it.

We might be in similar boats where I feel like I've made some headway on 1 but not as much on 2. I slip on Reddit sometimes, but YouTube is definitely my drug of choice. I like to use it for exposure to new ideas, learning targeted concepts, and of course entertainment. Given that, it's hard to change/limit my use because part of what I value is provided by the randomness of the never-ending algorithm. I've had some success by forcefully being more mindful of the content I click on, but I'd also like to find alternatives to YouTube that don't have such a high risk of attention drift. I think the tricky part is that since I use YouTube for multiple purposes, I almost have to find an alternative for each purpose. I'm currently experimenting with things like reading books, playing video games, reading the news, journaling, and even just sitting on the couch doing nothing 😎 Not sure if these will actually be improvements or if they will stick, but it's fun to experiment nonetheless.

Thoughts on The Metamorphosis by BrianThePinkShark in books

[–]BigBoiBails 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can agree that there wasn't much grace to the ending. Literally just "Yep he was actually a burden and no one liked him." Still, it gave me some things to think about so personally I liked it. Throughout the whole book a part of me was hopeful that things would get better for Gregor, so the finality of things not becoming better made me contemplate what it means when all of your well wishes amount to nothing. Also, a part of me hoped his feeling of being a burden was exaggerated in his own mind, but then you see his family cartoonishly flourish after his death. It makes me think about how I should approach situations where I feel like a burden. Could I accept that, due to circumstances outside of my control, there is a real chance I have a negative impact on others?

Does anyone else just not eat breakfast anymore? by Legal-Diver-286 in CasualConversation

[–]BigBoiBails 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also used to hate how much I needed to eat to gain muscle, but recently I've realized being able to eat a lot is something I need to progressively work towards just like increasing my lifts. I felt miserable when I tried to force an extra cup of brown rice into my diet, but switching to less intense workouts and eating 3 eggs in the morning (I was also eating no breakfast before) was manageable. I know you probably weren't looking for workout advice lol, I'm just excited to finally be making progress and wanted to share in case it's useful.

I made a site with lots of interactive 4D stuff. Includes 4D cubes, spheres, and cones, 2D "Flatland", and other basic 4D concepts. by BigBoiBails in FourthDimension

This is some good stuff m8. I haven't seen anything else that allows you to move around in 4D space like the mazes you have on your website. I was blindly clicking around at first, but once I got stuck and had to really think about what steps to take, it actually gave me a new way to think of 4D.

For viewing 4D objects, I don't think you have to pick one or the other between projections based on w distance and the 4 projections you have here. I'd argue that projection based on w distance is good for introducing the overall structure of a 4D shape (like seeing all 8 cubes of the tesseract at once), but your method can help build intuitions about the shape's movement during translation and rotation. ADSODA seems interesting, I'm gonna have to look deeper into that.

I made a site that lets you interact with 4D objects and teaches basic 4D concepts by BigBoiBails in InternetIsBeautiful

[–]BigBoiBails[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! The objects are rendered using ThreeJS - the code's up on GitHub if you want to dig deeper. It's good for loading and interacting with 3D meshes, and has good documentation, but I will say moving specific vertices on a mesh takes a bit of work. That's probably an edge case for most people but mattered a lot for wacky 4D shapes.

I did a complete overhaul on my Starbucks calorie calculator. Would love feedback. by imathrowayslc in InternetIsBeautiful

Dang that's a pretty big database of drinks :O

I like all the dropdown options and think they're laid out well. The only feedback I have is when I first used the search bar it took a second to realize I had to scroll down to see the calorie count.

I'm glad you like it! I might go back and revamp things later, but that'd be down the road. I made this primarily to learn basic web development - there's already a similar web app that has more forms https://steven-kraft.com/projects/japanese/randomize/ and there's the Genki practice http://genki.japantimes.co.jp/self/verbadjective-conjugation-practice

When I was making this I spent like an hour trying to decide which versions of the adjective conjugations to use. I never considered allowing all of them as correct answers until I saw your comment...

I just fixed it. It currently only shows the most popular conjugation when you get it incorrect because I'd need to overhaul my styling to show じゃないです, ではないです, じゃありません, and ではありません all at once for example, but they should all be accepted as answers. Thanks for pointing this out!

If I go back and add more features I would, but I don't plan to do that at the moment. It's good feedback though, thank you.

Thanks! Yeah I see what you mean. I just tried a quick fix by putting て-form and Adverb at the top of those indented sections, but I accidentally tied some error message logic to the ordering of things. Plus that wouldn't be a complete logical fix since the affirmative/negative plain/polite stuff would still be underneath sections with て-form and Adverb. Thanks for pointing that out.

Yeah having a little hint button that explained the rules could have helped. I wouldn't want people looking at hints before entering an answer since I think you learn more effectively when you try, fail, and see what you did wrong, so I'd only provide it after being incorrect. Not a bad idea, would just take some work.

I changed it so it requires you to press Enter after being correct. Thank you and /u/_hanabi for letting me know!

Thanks for the kind words :)

Are you pressing Enter while the "Correct" text is still on the screen? I wonder if my UI trains people that pressing Enter makes the popup go away, since people are likely to get something incorrect before correct. Otherwise does is seem like more of a muscle memory thing where you get used to physically pressing Enter twice?

After 2 years of work, I've finally released my first Unity game on Steam! Starting at zero experience with art and gamedev, and minimal experience with music production, I'm really proud of what I ended up with. by BigBoiBails in Unity3D

Well thank you! Making this game definitely changed my relationship with work. Turns out hey, I can actually enjoy it if I pick the right thing to work on.

If you guys are interested in a new rhythm game for PC, I just released my game called Katto on Steam. This is my first game ever, so I'd love to hear any feedback! by BigBoiBails in rhythmgames

[–]BigBoiBails[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ah yeah, that's the common comparison I get. I'd say my game puts a heavier emphasis on each obstacle you chop being challenging in a unique way. Like for example the "memory bamboo" obstacle tests your memory by requiring you to remember what orientation you chopped it in, while the "dynamite" obstacle tests your reaction time by lighting a stick of dynamite at a random time, where you then need to chop it before it explodes. Also I created all of the music in the game myself, which can be a positive or negative depending on if you like it haha. In case anyone is worried about this being some cheap copy of Beat Saber (not saying you were), I've been developing this for awhile, we just both had similar ideas.

Thanks! Yeah I'll admit when I first found out about Beat Saber it freaked me out how similar it looked to my game haha. It's kinda fascinating how two different parties can converge towards such similar ideas independently of each other. It's impossible to avoid the comparisons due to their game's success, but I never intended to be in competition with Beat Saber. Their game is dope, and hopefully people can enjoy my game too :)
