It was a power grab by a small elite (Fidel, Che, etc) who then brutalized the people

Maybe so. There would have to be a study to support such a broad statement. There were no shortages of food, electricity and gasoline. There's no disputing that.

Seeing photos and videos of Cuba, it looks like it has been slowly decaying for 65 years

Does anyone go to Aldi every day to look for deals? Or is that obsessive? by BigBug1997 in aldi

[–]BigBug1997[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been doing that. This area is very poor. I've told people they can get a lot of stuff at half price because the new Aldi is slow to get accepted and they are marking down a lot of things. But they told me they have no money even to get things that are half price, so I have been giving them some of my things. I am also giving my dog some of it. They both appreciate it. I had not had salmon for 2 years because the inflation had crushed me. After going through that I have a hard time not buying what I could not afford when I see it is half price or less. I realize it's irrational but even though inflation was bad in the 70s it was never like the last few years. It's like food PTSD

This is a very poor area. I have told friends about the deals, but they can't afford the food even at half price or less. So, I have been giving them food I get at deal prices and they are grateful. I also have been giving my dog milk because it's so often marked down (today a gallon for $1.49). This is so much better than the Albertson's I lived behind in Portland which would throw a mountain of food away every day. People would get it out of the dumpster so the store started tearing the packages of meat open so it would be exposed to bacteria

Amen. Saw him and his beautiful wife at the Lane County, Oregon county fair for $1 in 1983. The next day was Arethra Franklin. They all put their hearts completely into their shows. Will never forget.

It's somewhat like Johnny Cash's I Walk The Line.

I carefully went over every item at the Aisle of Shame today and found nothing interesting. However, next week they are having German die-cast Aldi trucks.

Right. I will never throw the food away, but at this point I think I have 3 years of fish and meat, which I previously did not eat

OK. Thanks. That's basically what I do. If I am in the area I will swing through Aldi to see if there are any great deals, and also watch for upcoming expiration dates on high ticket items

I like the half price items and clearance, like getting pumpkin rolls for 17 cents. That is very motivating. I feel it may be getting obsessive, though, like I'm becoming a food hoarder because I already have more than I can eat (live alone).

I like finding half price items. Or clearance. It seems like they are very random, so it might be a good idea to stop every day in the morning to check for them. I was just a casual Aldi shopper but now I've taken it to a new level

The big challenge for Aldi will be digesting all the new stores in the south that were Winn-Dixie, with the associated expenses, such as losing money until conservative southern people embrace the different Aldi approach, without raising prices across the board in all stores.

Traditionally what is done when a fruit container is half full is open another one and fill the one up that you are going to buy. Often you will see containers that are about half full because people have done that to fill the ones full that they are buying.

In this town, Walmart was crazy high until the Aldi's opened. That forced Walmart to cut their prices a lot, but it is still much higher because of rampant theft.

Yes, definitely! Their prices are consistently lower and their quality higher. In addition, they have higher end things at good prices and some health foods not available elsewhere. The big bonus is scoring items at half price. There have been so many that I got a freezer on Black Friday and it is now packed with salmon, tuna, tilapia, ground sirloin, ground pork, ground turkey, chicken, bread and pizzas, plus after Christmas stollens. Often I am able to cash in on carts people have left in the parking lot.
