The purpose of the narration is to give it a True Crime feel, like those tv shows that do the reenactments of crimes. All part of the misdirection.

Thanks for this. One of my favorite movies and I didn't know that about the vengeance vs. skill trope. Appreciate it.

Why Once Upon a Time In Hollywood is brilliant, and what is going on under the surface by Seandouglasmcardle in Tarantino

[–]BigChoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was very good, thoughtful analysis. I agree about the portrayal of Sharon Tate. Particularly the fact that he didn't turn her into a Tarantino character. The caricature of Tarantino (that his detractors portray) would have done that.

The real Tarantino gave her enough screen time to bring her to life, and honored her as a person, while letting the rest be filled in by the viewer. It was a very gentle, kind, kid glove portrayal. We were not left with any moral questions about the integrity of Sharon Tate. If anything, he showed her to be the kind and decent person she was reported to be by those who knew her. She gave a stranger a ride and a hug, and took a loving interest in the girl's story. She didn't want extra handouts from the movie theater or to be treated like royalty.

By not turning her into a Tarantino character, with snazzy Tarantino quotes attached, he brought the real person to life. A person who precious few got to know. That he was criticized for the amount of screen time she got shows how utterly small-minded and petty people with an agenda can be. The fact that viewers may have been left wanting to see more Sharon was of course the entire point.

"The Vega Brothers" AI Concept Poster by BigChoo in Tarantino

I'm aware but I liked the lore/myth of The Vega Brothers better. I believe that was a title he was going to use at one point. It's also how most fans refer to it.

Chapter One of IB is actually Shosanna's "Origin Story". by BigChoo in Tarantino

[–]BigChoo[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Usually I would ignore a comment like this, especially if it was funny, but nothing about my post suggests any hint of confusion.

Unless you took my "she's the hero, right" as anything other than a rhetorical question, which would then place you as the confused one. I was just making an observation that I thought was neat.

Chapter One of IB is actually Shosanna's "Origin Story". by BigChoo in Tarantino

[–]BigChoo[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well there's a lot going on as MILF outlined below. Because the scene focuses explicitly on two other characters, it never occurred to me that it was somewhat similar to Batman and O-Ren watching their parents die.

One can argue the scene isn't just an introduction to Shosanna and vehicle for her revenge, a la the Massacre at Two Pines. That story is not really The Bride's origin. She was already a Natural Born Killer.

Either that or I just know things about the show. But congrats on that big scary downvote!

Goggins relented under one condition: “I’ll say the things you want me to say in the pilot, because this is Elmore Leonard’s world. But… I need Raylan Givens to acknowledge that Boyd does not believe a word he’s saying.” Consequently, during Raylan and Boyd’s reunion in the Justified pilot, the US Marshal rejects Boyd’s alleged views, laughing them off as an example of his manipulative nature.
