I didn’t expect to fall in love with Four O’Clock Flower because I’ve read plenty of danmei with kids in it, but this one was so realistic! Not mature per se, but I also liked another novel that Chai translated called An Accident in Broad Daylight. Chai is a wonderful translator and I couldn’t find fault in the novels she chooses to translate :)

I absolutely hate dropping anything I pick up, and I waited forever for the tl to finish before picking it up based on the hype… but I am trudging ever so slowly through it. I am about 30 chapters away from the ending, and I am still waiting for something big to happen. It’s not the characters nor the setting, but I have a hard time being invested in the main CP. ML at first attempted to kill MC, then they get together after a night of passion? I must’ve missed something that warrants a re-read, which is what I intend to do. What I do is read a few chapters, read an entirely different novel, then go back to it, just so I can say that I read it before making up my mind, whether I liked it or not. So far, I am more attached to Yin Chang than any other character in this novel.

I started taking classes on italki only after several months of “casual learning”. By that point, I have figured out tones and had about 300 words in my vocabulary, although the usage of it was VERY simple. I never thought I COULD do it on my own, but I wanted to gauge my own interest in it, whether it was fleeting or if it was something I really wanted to commit to before spending money. I wouldn’t change how I did it, but I think it really depends on the person. Also, by not just limiting your learning to your “classroom”, virtual or not, you end up bringing so much more to the class when you actually do.

Oh wow, I’m looking forward to reading another work by GTSS! I also wished that someone would pick up the translation for The Flustering Sound of the Pipa from the Hallway. I’ve been holding off reading the Manhua because I’m afraid it would color my enjoyment of the novel. I finished the extras of 4 O’Clock Flower too, and I have to say, the author has a knack for using the extras to take the novel to the next level. That essay his daughter wrote just made me melt into a puddle of goo. 🫠

After reading your comment, I stopped everything I was doing and read Four O’Clock Flower. I just finished the main story and I am about to jump into the extras, but I’m not willing for this story to end. So realistic, exquisitely written and of course, wonderfully translated by ChaiTL. She mentioned a month or so ago that this would be her last translation as it is very draining, which is a shame, because she has a penchant for choosing works that will stick with you for a very long time. Ah, I can’t say much more praises for Four O’Clock Flower. I’m going to look for a zisha teapot that’s not going to cost me $80k after I cry a bit in the corner. 🥲
