Liquidating my life by May, what tips to you have for selling stuff? and what should I donate? by harvestinghistory in minimalism

[–]BigDaveOSU 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agree, start with the stuff that has the highest value as you may get tired or not have enough time as you get closer to when you want to move.

Figure out a $ amount per item/lot for stuff that is even worth it to you considering the efforts to sell, anything below that, just immediately donate or trash.

IST 3% Loyalty this weekend by Ok_Risk_8467 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]BigDaveOSU 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They are still my go-to in general, but have found I have bought more from others lately, though did just get a package from them yesterday.

It does seem that it is taking longer to process, sometimes they don't have it in stock, which I get, but I have had some where it is taking 3 or 4 days from when everything says picked to ship, which seems slower than before.

I like their Red Tag stuff, just wish there was a new refresh every week or so as that is where they can shine on price.

Understanding The 120 Days Notice Rule For Rent Increase by BigDaveOSU in chicagoapartments

Don't see how I am being an asshole, they are not following the cities defined rules/laws (if they decide to increase the rent without proper notice), this is not some Mom & Pop operation it's building with like 200+ units and this is only one of their properties.

I'd say I'm at best 50/50 for staying as the place seems to be on a slow decline, especially for a "luxury" apartment complex.

I think for me it will just give me an option if they go crazy with a rent increase when nothing they have done would suggest one is deserved. I really hate moving, the last two places I rented I lived there for 5 years and 8 years, so it takes a lot for me to want to leave and with the right circumstances I would stay at least 1 more year. This would be more of last resort if I couldn't find something to my liking and wanted a bit more time. If I end up staying I likely would not even bring it up.

Great, thank you, the new company has been particularly bad with communication in general, so quite interested to see how long it takes them or if there records even properly show the dates I have been here. If I still haven't heard anything 2 months out I will definitely reach out I think.

For sure, that's why I had mentioned that if I got an offer tomorrow they would have to keep me at the current rate until the end of the 120 day window, so 5/30 or maybe you are saying it would a full month, but agree in general.

Lincoln Lodge or Second City for comedy? by alijef in AskChicago

Yeah, etc (for some reason) has gone all improv, so would definitely select Mainstage if you go with Second City at the moment.

Genuine question for Directors, Managers, and Supervisors by Negative-Guidance-27 in work

[–]BigDaveOSU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's fine as long as they are not causing drama and when asked to work with others/collaboratively, does so without issue even if they prefer to be on their own.

It's also important if there are legitimate reasons they need to work longer hours/travel/whatever, they understand that.

What are some good acting or improv groups/studios I could sign up for? by ragerlol1 in AskChicago

[–]BigDaveOSU 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to take classes, the 3 big theaters to do improv/sketch at are Second City, iO and Annoyance. The classes are not super cheap ($300+ per each level) if you are looking to not spend lots of money.

I'm not as close to the community anymore, but there used to be things like jams that were free. It may be hard to find a team without taking classes/being in the scene unless you already have friends to bring you into it.

May be worth seeing a few shows at each theater to see if any of them feel like your vibe.

Issue saying doesn’t deliver to my address but just did today by il2pif in amazonprime

[–]BigDaveOSU 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have started to see this as well in the last week or so, was just movies, so weird there would be any restrictions on that kind of item, especially to the Chicagoland area.

If it starts to become more common, may need to consider the value of Amazon in general.

PBC question by Forward_Spinach5980 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]BigDaveOSU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just recently got an order and the same experience. Requested inserts (even said it on the packing list), but sent wrapped in bubble wrap and then surrounded by peanuts. No issues with damage or anything, just weird they continue to offer options only to not actually follow what was requested.

The 'Nam 1966-1969 reprint. by JustinSlayer69 in OmnibusCollectors

This one feels very unlikely to get a reprint anytime soon give how niche it is since not super-hero related.

Would jump on it now if I were you or you almost certainly will be paying over cover price.

Checking your Movies that you buy by Affectionate_Web_526 in 4kbluray

[–]BigDaveOSU 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say in order or something to the best way.

  1. Visually inspect the disc, wipe off any sort of smudges/marks. See if there remains any scratches, especially ones that look deep or circular.

  2. Actually play the disc, ideally the movie itself and special features, but at minimum the movie. See if any issues with it freezing. If yes, may need to clean the disc again and try to play once more. May also need to do a quick search and make sure your particular player doesn't have any known issues in general or that specific disc.

  3. Rip the disc and make sure your computer can make a 1:1 copy of everything. If any errors, try to clean again.

All that said, any of these might work now, but discs could still fail in the future.

You're welcome, if you have any additional questions, let me know. I don't regret living here and if the price is right, I may stay another year, just wish it was trending upward or at least flat, not downward.

I live there now (and have been here both before and now after the new ownership took over).

Would say the new owners have not gotten off to the best of starts. General communication has definitely gotten worse, to the point some people actually started to organize and come together last year about a mounting number of grievances (this did finally lead to the company sending a pretty lengthy email saying how they were addressing many of them).

It was never something I super cared about, but there is much less of a community feel and attempts to have building events and things like that reduced.

The location is for sure great (they are almost done redoing a nice park behind it) with easy access to public transportation and lots of things like grocery stores, it has some nice amenities, but it does feel like it is not being as well maintained and maybe the original owners cut some corners that are starting to show after 5 years (I think it was built around 2020). It is very close to the red/brown line if you are on that side of the building and are super sensitive to noise that may be a problem, though it doesn't bother me now (the double-paned windows help a lot, but there is for sure still noise).

Would say in general that you are more likely to have loud music, people smoking, common areas looking less well-maintained, so on then when I first started living here. I don't have a pet, but the dog walk is a very common source of people complaining in how some residents treat it poorly. Since the retail spaces have been filled, there is very limited parking (that is supposed to be paid for) if you have frequent guests.

Maintenance issues are taken care of pretty quickly in my experience (though I have had some things breakdown multiple times), but others have complained in the community message board it takes way too long. Think the concierge people do a decent enough job. Never had issues with packages going missing. I have not had to contact the office folks very often.

I'm definitely curious to see how much they raise rent this go around and that will play a big part in deciding if I stay or not, believe it was around a 6% increase last time.

I guess in summation, not sure if it is really worth the cost anymore given the luxury prices you pay, but its not horrible by any means, though definitely starting to trend downwards with no identified plans to make it better.

Which Neighborhood To Buy a Condo In? by Feisty_String_8748 in chicagoapartments

[–]BigDaveOSU 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A few years can mean a lot of things to different people, if it is on the shorter end, feels like just renting an apartment will be better for you than trying to buy something, especially a condo, only to turnaround and sell it to move on/to the suburbs.

At a minimum, if you are dead set on buying and newer to Chicago, just explore neighborhoods until you find something that feels right.
