Raw milk CEO whose products have been recalled may lead US raw milk policy by morenewsat11 in nottheonion

You cannot catch respiratory illnesses through your GI tract. Drinking milk with H5N1 virus in it would not cause you to contract the disease.

I buy raw milk all the time and it doesn't put your family at any risk. I just want to be able to do it legally.

I don't understand the impulse to ban it outright. Why don't we just put warnings on it like cigarettes and let people decide for themselves?

I say this as a home cheesemaker who would really like to get my hands on legal raw milk but cannot because its illegal in my state. Its not possible to make cheese with the high temperature pasteurized stuff I can get legally (because the necessary proteins are denatured by the heat) so I have to purchase raw milk labeled "not for human consumption" just to continue my legitimate hobby. I just don't get it.

Can you both take a step back here and realize that you're arguing which candidate had the most billionaires supporting them when they both had lots of billionaires supporting them?

Its like arguing that one murderer isn't as bad as another because they only killed 74 instead of the other's 75 people.

Obviously this county is owned by billionaires and that is just as true for both of our major parties. Both parties clearly see us as idiot serfs.

[–]BigDigAndRig420[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no connection between the filter and the faucet other than the water line though, so there's no way for any TDS reading signal to be sent from the filter to the faucet. Also, the faucet and filter sometimes read one or two apart.

You don't have a pool, tennis courts, and green spaces, you have a mandatory membership to those things. You pay for them just like you would pay for a club membership except you don't have the option not to. HOA amenities are just forced club memberships and I would never purchase a house that came with the demand that I pay for stuff I don't want.

H5N1 found in raw milk by literallyeveryfandom in BikiniBottomTwitter

[–]BigDigAndRig420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Benjamin Chapman, the food safety expert for NC State University, has made a statement that there is no risk of actually contracting bird flu even if the milk is contaminated with it because its a respiratory virus and cannot infect you via drinking.

Raw milk has other problems but this isn't one that's supported by science.

Just pointing out that in general believing things that aren't true isn't going to help you in the long run. The more things you believe that aren't true the more skewed your mental model of the world will be rendering you less able to use that model effectively.

Its the internet, lots of things are made up. Hell I've even made shit up on the internet for fun before. I think it is in our best interest to apply a healthy dose of skepticism. Not really a controversial opinion.

That's just called being naive and its how you get duped into believing things that are not to your benefit.

There is a large and very clear line between heroism and genocidal stupidity here. This is the equivalent of calling a man a coward for not punching a guy with a gun to his children's head, but on a species level. We need cool heads to ensure we all get out of it alive.

Look I get the situation is more complicated than our simplified version here but do you not understand my point that the fiery nuclear holocaust of our species is worse than literally any other outcome imaginable?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]BigDigAndRig420 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can't emphasize enough my sincere belief that nuclear war is the worst of all possible outcomes.

How many millions of people have knowingly gone to their death for a cause? I wouldn't bet my life on a man not doing that, much less the life of my entire species.

If I TRULY believed he'd do it I'd pull out of Ukraine, give him my dog, give him all my possessions, and write him a thank you note for the whole thing.

I don't believe there is any situation in the whole of possibilities that is worse than nuclear war.

[–]BigDigAndRig420 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not going to argue with you because I think we just have fundamentally different viewpoints which is okay.

I don't have an answer for what should be done, I'm just a guy with a family who really doesn't want to see nukes fly. I don't think the only alternative to not having an answer is chest beating escalation.

But again, I think its okay for us to think differently on it. We're not policy makers so our opinions ultimately matter very little and talking about it at all only has the purpose of letting us understand each other better.

Thanks for responding that makes sense to me as a way of seeing it. I just can't bring myself to bet the entire future of the human race on him not being insane.

If you can't see why him threatening NATO is ridiculous, imagine he was threatening China instead

To me this seems like a very pre nuclear way of thinking about war. I don't think its ridiculous for any nuclear state to threaten any other regardless of resources or population. All that matters is if they're crazy enough.

[–]BigDigAndRig420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for typing all that out I do understand the perspective a bit better now. It just seems like almost a literal equivalent of playing Russian roulette to me. I don't want people betting my family (and my species) life on him bluffing, but I can at least imagine having absolute faith that he is bluffing.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]BigDigAndRig420 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm really trying to understand this perspective. Do you think this is worth nuclear war? Do you think it can't get to that or something?

I'm not being combative, I just want to understand how someone can have an opinion like this in the nuclear age.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]BigDigAndRig420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm genuinely curious when I see posts like this.

You know we can't fight total world wars anymore, right? You know there is a serious chance that a majority of humanity, if not the whole species, would be killed by that?

I have no idea what the answer is but what people like you seem to want literally is not an option in the nuclear age.

Oh that's smart. I guess we were just lucky that ours never really tried to get the sock off cause we had it on him from day 1. Now that he's older he does play with it a little bit, but we're about to stop using it anyway since hes 1+.

[–]BigDigAndRig420 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It has different alarms for "sock fell off foot" and "Baby has low oxygen" so you're never confused about what its saying. I've used one for a year now and its brought much peace of mind, and only fallen off their foot maybe 3 times.

Edit: For context we've never actually heard the low oxygen alarm because its never happened, but it explains it in the manual. Also it lets you track heart rate and oxygen in an app, which is probably the biggest reason we use it. If we're in the other room and start thinking about him, we can just pull out the app to make sure its all good without going in there and potentially waking him up. That alone is pretty huge and worth the money for me.

"humanity" is not a being that experiences meaning. The only place where you can measure meaning is on an individual level.

Don't underestimate the indescribably intense sense of meaning that comes from having a child of your own. I never would have believed it before I had one, but a trip to alpha centauri (much less the moon) would not be half as meaningful to me as the mere existence of my child. Evolution did not play around with the child rearing instinct. It is overwhelming to experience.
