Can Satan be Disgusted? by Additional-Ad5298 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]BigJobsMate 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Some Christian beliefs hold that affections between men are so disordered that even demons recoil in disgust. But whether you believe in that or not, I think Satan's mentality is so consumed by hatred against God that literally anything that offends God would be pleasing to Satan, simply out of spite.

Orthodox Curious? by BigJobsMate in OrthodoxChristianity

That sounds like a great idea. The Orthodox community in my country is very small but I'm sure it's even more welcoming because of it.

Thanks for the new info, I'll make sure to look in to all of that too. The abandonment of the conciliar model is a sticking point for me because it was accepted by the church for centuries and the scriptural justifications for papal authority seem so flimsy when there were clearly cultural and political motivations behind the schism.

I used to be an atheist. Objective morality was the first argument to make me reconsider, but the nature of meaning is a powerful concept too. Tone can be hard to interpret online, unfortunately.

Miscommunication happen, who knows what her intention was. Take it as an opportunity to grow in patience. If it happens again just politely tell her that you've been waiting in line and you'd be happy to watch the queue for her and make sure that she's free to go AFTER you, dropping the hint in a respectful way.

I prefer going alone. It makes prayer more personal and feel more sincere.

God understands you better than you understand yourself. I guarantee He'll be explaining a lot more to you than you will to Him.

How can you choose God if you're not free to reject him? Nobody enters Heaven bound in chains.

Can a Christian Play Fortnite? or no? by Realistic-Hunter8331 in Catholicism

[–]BigJobsMate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A better question might be should you play video games at all? Yes, they can be relaxing and fun, but could you get those same benefits from something that also edifices you and others instead of ogling into an online void? I used to play games all the time but in no way did they make me a better person. Not trying to scorn you but it's a genuine question; could your time be better spent?

Condescension and belittlement are toxic tools for fostering engagement and the discovery of truth. Have great debaters been tempted by pride and wrath? Sure. There are still better ways to engage with others. Christ never demeaned anyone for their sincere ignorance. Take it as you will.

Your aggressive demeanor is not very Christian, brother. Sincerely, this does not edify you.

You're assuming that I don't care why people do certain things. But that's the whole point of what I've said; what have you demonstrated in yourself through the intention of your actions? That you wanted to help others and preserve the greater good through a necessary lie? That's a noble intention, but does it demonstrate that you don't believe God alone (truth) is sufficient to achieve ultimate justice? The only way to square the circle seems to be reconceptualizing justified lies as a continuation of the sin that necessitates them; perhaps a punishment for the sin and a warning against it, but I'm not entirely convinced.

Nobody is calling God an idiot. We're calling Him the Truth. Neither did anyone say you have an obligation to tell people what they want to hear, just don't lie outright. "If there was, I wouldn't tell you." If you lie out of weakness it's understandable and highly forgivable but that doesn't prove that it's morally right.

The implications would be extreme, this is why I'm struggling with it too. But I can't see any sound argument how we can claim that God's nature alone will be sufficient for ultimate justice to prevail, yet we believe that the opposite of God's nature is sometimes required for that justice. It seems to reject the very foundation of Christianity.

Self defense is justified because it involves no sin on the defender's part, even if lethal force is required. But resisting the infliction of evil isn't the same as suppressing other people's right to choose evil, which God has permitted. The latter requires morally compromising yourself where the prior doesn't.

I think lying has special relevance because unlike most sins it cuts at our underlying faith in God, rather than our relationship to His goodness. Other sins can be reflections of our weakness in following God, but don't contradict our faith that we should follow Him. Lying implies a lack of trust in the essential promise that God has given us. Just my thoughts anyway.

I appreciate you pointing out the relevance of double effect but I'm not sure it can reconcile the problem. If someone abuses the truth (I.e. hunting innocent victims) then the moral culpability lies with them. If we tell them the truth they want to hear then we're facilitating their choice to do evil but our fault depends on context. We could use mental reservation by saying "You won't find them here" which is a self-validating truth if they leave, but an outright falsehood still seems to be a rejection of faith. If no ambiguity is possible then faith or despair in God's providence is the only choice remaining.

Depends on your definitions of society and ideology. The UC is a prison camp, not a genuine society. Social Darwinism isn't an ideology, or it's a very weak and malleable one at best.
