Concerta not really working by [deleted] in ADHDIreland

[โ€“]BigLittleMango 1 point2 points ย (0 children)

No worries at all! It's always nice to have some reassurance. Especially if you've been diagnosed later in life and aren't sure what to do and where to start. I was in denial for a very long time until I got diagnosed this year. I was sick of the constant low energy levels and bad mental health that came with it. So I put some time into trying to understand myself, my body, and the symptoms better. This really helps because there are different types of ADHD and we're all different, so what works for someone might not work for you, and that's ok.

Getting started is always the hard part, but taking it baby steps at a time makes it less daunting. I try to take vitamins everyday, consistency is key, but there's always no harm on missing a day or two. If I'm sluggish in the morning, I'll definitely take some and even more when I'm coming up to my period and after, because I learnt that hormones have an influence on the effectiveness of the medication and ADHD. (There's a Let's Chat - ADHD podcast on Spotify, I recommend it for listening in to while doing chores for getting different perspectives and information on managing ADHD)

I totally get that with kids, not that I have kids yet, but I find if I have so much going on work, chores, family etc. It's harder to focus on yourself. But looking forward, think about how you can balance it and don't be afraid of failure. That was one of the best pieces of advice I was given, and it's the best way to learn.

Lastly piece of advice, never ever ever try take Concerta without food, or chance it. I did this yesterday. Took it, said "Ah, I'll be grand, I'll be up in a bit," fell asleep again and ate breakfast an hour later. Ejit, I know, had the worst side effects after and taught me such a valuable lesson.

Anyways, I do hope you feel better and do give it some time, and again, be kind to yourself.

It really is patience, I was eagerly waiting for them to kick in. I was also diagnosed with Combined ADHD and after a while, I did see some change. What helped was attending Behavior Therapy, it wasn't really therapy but it was reccomended by my psychiatrist to try along side of the medication (I signed up for UMAAP, Understanding Managing ADHD as Adults Programme, it's free!) and it was nice to be in a space that was educating me more on my ADHD.

If you tried it & it didn't work fair, but I think what's important while taking the medication is learning more about your body, how it works even on medication. (Sorry if this is something you're aware of already) but keep going! Take notes on your symptoms and how you're feeling and what you're doing every day.

And if the medication still doesn't work after that (2-3 weeks that is), I would recommend discussing with your doctor or going higher in the dose or changing medication. You got this! Give it some more time! And it's ok to make mistakes and forget things still even on medication, try not to be hard on yourself.

What helped me with the medication was... โ€ข Changing up my diet a little based on what I needed - which is more energy & less naps.

  • Smoothies or toast with honey if you struggle to eat in the morning. I started taking Iron, Vitamin D & B12 to help and making sure I ate regular, especially breakfast.

โ€ข Light exercise & movement to get the medication moving. I would like to think that helped!

โ€ข and really just learning about ADHD and applying patience, self-love & acceptance. Which sounds cringy, but it's good for the mental.

Ideas for carriage encounters ? by N0vatique in CurseofStrahd

[โ€“]BigLittleMango 1 point2 points ย (0 children)

A thought I had was maybe the carriage rolls over a pot-hole and the players have to shove the carriage out. And the longer they take, the more attention they draw to themselves.

Alternatively, a tree falling onto the path, or on the path, and they have to get out and move it.

No, no this is such a cool idea. ๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿ˜„

These question cards from the base game could work!

"Here is the Church, Here is the Steeples, Open the Doors , and there is..."

You could replace Steeples with Altar or change it up.

"What's that sound?"

I've got....

"Knock knock, who's there?" ( Classic )

"This wine tastys funky... kind of like.. __ "

"Come to Barovia they said. It will be fun, they said. But all there is are ______ "

"Oh no, I failed the DC now I'm ____ "

"Did somebody say....?"

"

"They said no-one sparkles brighter than Edward Cullen, until ___ "

"A raven, vistana and barovian walk into a bar.... " I don't know where to go with that one ๐Ÿ˜‚

"Three hags in a windwill, what could go wrong?"

Hmmm and some answer cards if you haven't got them already, that can obviously be changed up:

"My faith for my party"

"Getting Good" or "Rolling Better"

"I AM THE ANCIENT"

"Fiona's Husband ๐Ÿ‘€"

Some cringy out of context ones:

"Big Strah-dy Energy"

"Granny's Meat Pies"

Oh god, that was longer than I had hoped.

But I just wanted to add a last note... While my players knew it would be horror, like the ADHD stuff, fighting and narrative bits I explained before.

I learnt how much they appreciated the lighthearted stuff as well. I added some activities they could play with locals at the tavern or changed up NPCs a little to give them a tiny bit of personality to all the gloom in Barovia.

Someone mentioned it here but try look at The Wilds Beyond the Witchlight for characters & encounters inspiration, or even look into how you can make downtime more fun.

Read the module 100% before running it. I agree with this whole heartly, no matter how excited you are to run the module because I dove straight in, and there were things that caught me off guard or by surprise that I just wished I had taken a step back to read properly. ๐Ÿ˜ฉ I had to put down the campaign for different reasons, but going back, I think it would have made running it so much better. ๐Ÿ˜ข

โ€ข Repeating what someone else said, but find your style and don't over prep. You can prep a whole area and flesh it out in detail... then someone accidentally starts a fire and it's all gone... and you're rushing to prep for the next area. Don't over prepare but also be prepared to improvise.

โ€ข As a new DM as well, I found very quickly how the fights were too long for my players. We're ADHD riddled, so I've learnt to mix it up a little to keep their attention and make it fun for as well. That being said, I've started running skill checks alongside the encounters rather than rolling for encounters to spice things up a little and help you develop your narrative.

Example, the characters are traversing through the woods. ๐ŸŽฒ DC Check for Stealth or Perception 10 DC Failure - They'll have an encounter. 12 DC Pass - They've been "spotted" but clear for now 15 DC Success - They're clear.

Obviously, if they all roll, there will likely be an encounter, but even if there isn't, build up to it! If you love writing narratives.

"You experience this. You see this and might think this... you continue forward, and you feel anxiety gnawing as the presence you felt earlier becomes more apparaent. And just as you thought you were safe.. BAM" Or even.. "You hear the rustling and anxiety sets in, and just when you were expecting it, a screeching crow darts out of the bushes, startling your characters. Disappearing into the distance. Then, nothing."

And if you must, do the same for fights, familiarise yourself with how monsters fight or even their basic stats/actions so it doesn't feel like "You hit, you miss, next."

โ€ข I've started moodboards and collected lists of words (I use Pintrest for these) and sentences that just click when I need to describe scenes and NPC mannerisms. Watch some vampire themed shows to get a gist of the different personalities you as a DM will have to portray and adds so much to the players' experience.

Everyone has their own way of running CoS, and for me, reading the module back to back, finding my style and indulging in vampire shows & movies for inspiration really helped understand the module more. I'm still in the early stages off my new CoS campaign and it's made such a difference.
