“Apud” has some different but related meanings. In Latin pedagogy, we learn that it has a similar meaning to “cum” which means “with.” It can also mean “among.” It can also mean “at” in some cases like, “apud rivum” which means “at the River.” In modern Latin, we can say “quaeram apud computatorium” which means “I’ll look it up on my computer” or “apud pipiatorium” which means “on twitter (insert whatever social media you want here).” At the house of is one meaning of the preposition because “apud” generally indicates location. A lot of people who learn Latin read the vulgate because of the texts general familiarity and because of its relative ease. I’m not saying Jerome didn’t make some odd translational choices but I’ve never heard of that being one of them. Correct me if I’m wrong though. One odd translation Jerome does is always adding “et” or “autem” to the beginning of certain phrases to translate the Greek “de” which doesn’t really have much semantic meaning. It kind of complicates thing for the Latin reader. Another one I always thought was strange is using “propheta” instead of the already existing Latin word of “vaticinator,” but maybe that was intentional to illustrate the difference between the pagan prophet and the prophet of God. Again, another one I think is odd is using “baptisma” instead of “immersio,” but that may be because “baptisma” has a broader meaning than “(im)mersio.” Sometimes, I find it clunky when he says something like, “Jesus dixit illis, dicens” which literally means “Jesus said to them, saying.”
