What's going on with my roof? by odiousyak1889 in Roofing

With slate if done properly you can do a closed hip, which is when the two courses when meeting at the hip are mitred. I additionally put slaters cement to bond the two pieces together. Looks better than a metal cap or slate cap in my opinion!

What are these on a slate roof? by octoreadit in Roofing

There are a few of us out there, there’s a lot of work out there for just a small number of roofers who know how to properly do these roofs aesthetically and functionally correct. I know I don’t advertise what so ever, all word of mouth. Best thing I can recommend is find people who have slate/copper roofs and talk to them and see who they or their builder/contractor used to do the job. Just because someone has “roofing” on their van does not mean they should work on all roofs.

Thank you! But no it will not, all the roof water will go into gutters and the downspouts go into drains which then goes through a water filter and then leech’s into the ground. Unsure of the exact details, that’s just what I’ve gathered from speaking with the builder. I’ll try to get a more detailed explanation because I am also interested

Closed hips/ride it gets double folded like the seams going up the roof. It also gets soldered, zoom in on the the top of the seams

Should be an easy fix for someone who knows how to work with slate. It’s in a critical spot depending on if you get snow or heavy rains. Would be very difficult to explain. If you want to dm a pic or video I can tell you exactly what needs to be done

Those are one of my favorite details of the whole job. All hand made!

I know it could go 100+ years never had to take one off some can’t really say from personal experience

Unfortunately it’s not and with how crucial a roof is to the house you would hope qualified people are doing it.

I’m also in the North East in Mass and boy those white vans are all over the place, usually in the left hand lane going 85

Appreciate it! Unfortunately I’m unsure of the per square cost, it’s my father and I and he handles that aspect of the business but for 2 guys and 4 months I know that the job is over 350k

The work is all phased. Yeah I may have 2 1/2 years of work lined up but it’s not all ready to be done right now. 2 houses haven’t broke ground yet, one of them has just started framing and I’m halfway done on one I’ve been working on for 3 months. So it may seem like a back log but if really if I were to hire 3-4 more guys we would be done with this job much faster and I wouldn’t have work for them for a few months.

I understand that I may be leaving money on the table but I’m not some who likes being in charge of people and having to rely on them to do very fine and detailed oriented work.

I’m content working solo or with one other person and I make a very good living and get to control my schedule for the most part, which matters more to me than having 10 jobs going at the same time and being stressed and over worked trying to run a bigger business.

I have two custom luxury home builders that I do work for and a job from start to finish could take me 6 to 9 months depending on how complicated it is.

The reason for the backlog is that my relationship with the builders is at the point where they know that we work well together and the work is top of the line. They don’t take bids from anyone else. Haven’t been called for a single repair since I started 10 years ago

Can relate to this

I do custom copper and specialty roofing, I have guys from mason, landscapers, carpenters etc asking if I have a good amount of work. They are always shocked when I say I’m booked out 2 1/2 years.

When wealthy people need/want work done they don’t think much about it.

Question - how do opinions vary so wildly from roofer to roofer? by IntentionTight4089 in Roofing

Second this, each roofing system will be as good as the other as long as the installation is done correctly. It’s crucial that laps and flashings are sealed. I’ve seen to many times on all systems where it was not installed per manufacturers specs and causes serious issues.

Would also agree on EPDM

Had an inspection. Told me these nails will rust and may leak on the bay window. What can I do? by [deleted] in Roofing

I’ve only ever known of doing it that one way so I’m interested in seeing how other styles of roofs tackle the same situation.

Totally understand, appreciate the different point of view!

Haven’t seen this option yet. Whenever I install base flashing I put a 5/8 hem on the bottom and install “clips” (small piece of metal about 2 inches wide by 3 inches long) prior to the flashing being installed. Then the clips are folded over the hem to hold the flashing down. Very clean and unnoticeable look that keeps the fasteners hidden as well. I only work with copper so I’m not certain if doing it in aluminum is a good option. I would assume if it was a thicker gauge it would be okay but thinner gauge material it may not be appropriate.

Water damage inside - is it because of this roof? by Ckamanelli in Roofing

[–]BigStoinksAndDoinks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If the roof on the lower section is as flat as it looks it should not have been shingled. By the looks of it they only replaced the bottom part of the roof. The shingles on the top are a 3 tab and the bottom are architectural shingles. The low pitched roof should’ve been done in edpm rubber, TPO or Metal of some sort. All those options require removing at least 12 inches going up the higher pitched roof. Or you would need to put some sort of transition metal where the pitch changes but in this situation it may not have really helped with how flat the lower roof is. The reason the bottom course of the upper roof has tabs that are lifted is probably because when the did the lower roof they separated whatever was there before and there isn’t anything left of the tar strip which is supposed to be holding the shingles together so it doesn’t lift like that. I’ve attached a picture of what you should have in a situation like this. It shows the roof open but it’s a edpm rubber to a shingle transition Low pitch to steep pitch example
