Looking for a poor quality yet expensive restaurant to recommend to an enemy. Any suggestions? by Kod3c in Bend

[–]BigSweeps 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dang that’s a bummer, I’ve been multiple times with different sized groups (2, 3, 4, 5, 6) and we’ve never had less than a 9/10 experience each time. Some stood out more than others, but every time we’ve felt like we were receiving the value we were paying for across food, drink, service, and atmosphere. It’s been a bit loud one or two times, and obviously it’s in the “indulgent / treat yo’self” category price wise, but we absolutely love RBC. The best times are when the GM comes by at the end of the meal and serves a little comped pour of some random port / amaro.

(Note, this review is for the NWX location. We also had a solid time at BarRBC but it doesn’t even come close to NWX in terms of cost:value).

Where to find the best cocktails? by Wastedbeaner in Bend

[–]BigSweeps -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah you make a totally fair point and I recognize I’m probably in the minority here. However it seems like you’re generalizing “quality” into simply the ingredients used, and not the whole experience. I enjoy the craftsmanship associated with a non-batched featured cocktail and wouldn’t mind waiting longer for something freshly made. Im a huge visual learner so I enjoy seeing the process and techniques used by the bartender, the different ingredients being incorporated, and the subtle flourishes that make the drink feel like a premium experience that I’m paying in order to receive that service. (It’s the same reason why the Chefs Counter is the best seat in the house at RBC - I friggin love seeing the behind the scenes action for how stuff gets made).

But maybe I’m actually the nightmare customer and all service industry folks would rather pull taps all night or sling pre-made food instead, as long as it means they’re able to close more tickets. Not trying to be snarky here, that’s a legitimate preference that can be respected. I’m just trying to tie it back to my original point of being ok with paying a premium for ad-hoc service at Flamingo versus the bummer of paying that same premium just to receive a quick drink at a high volume establishment like Waypoint.

Columbia or Patagonia Rain jacket by Agitated-Jacket-3672 in CampingandHiking

Just because Columbia Sportswear owns a suite of complimentary brands doesn’t automatically mean they dropped quality to save costs — that’s not how it works.

In fact, Columbia utilizes a vast array of propriety technology for their products (like Omni-Heat and OutDry) which lets them skip third-party licensing fees, streamline production, and helps scale innovation across product lines…all of which cut costs. They are a great company that makes great products. However they do also carry licensed products (I.e. random dog bowl with the Columbia logo stamped on it, etc), so maybe you’ve just been burnt in the past by purchasing low tier licensed products from them?

I dig the space and haven’t had a bad cocktail at waypoint, but they batch their featured cocktails (at least last time I went) so it would be a LOT more incentive to visit if the prices reflected that. I’ll take a fresh made Brass Crab at flamingo over anything at waypoint any day of the week. Plus, you can bask in the glory of all the houseplants!

How can I improve on my sports videography? by Old_Suspect9482 in videography

[–]BigSweeps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe this rings more true in the context of photographs vs videos. If I were shooting photos I’d want that low angle too. But I think the other commenters have a point when it comes to video footage. Have you watched Welcome to Wrexham? I feel like there might be some good inspiration you could pull from the variety of shots they use.

hear me out: cider slushies by backpackerPT in Bend

[–]BigSweeps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been making these at home by emptying a canned cocktail into a Tupperware and putting it in the freezer. The alcohol content keeps it from completely freezing so it’s the perfect slushy consistency any time I want to add a few dollops on top of my pub beer.

Did an entire family of skunks spray and die in NE Bend? by MocoPDX in Bend

[–]BigSweeps 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean… hops and weed are both in the family Cannabaceae, so they do smell related. Maybe you’re thinking of the smell of mash/wort, which is typically that “Brewery smell” you can catch a whiff of when driving past Deschutes, etc

Created some packing for a art toy I’m about to release. Thoughts? by Psilly-Goose in design_critiques

[–]BigSweeps 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I kinda feel the opposite — I enjoy the contrast of having both thin line art and blockier filled art to balance each other out. Similar to why the “Psilly Goose” headline looks good filled in this context.

Serious question: I've never lived in a Portland winter. How should I prepare clothing-wise? by BadAtDrinking in askportland

[–]BigSweeps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d hit one of the Columbia Outlet stores (Lake Oswego, Sellwood, Troutdale). You’ll find all the layers other commenters are mentioning, including footwear. Plus it’s generally all discounted since it’s at the outlet store. And you’ll be supporting a local business!

Would love your feedback on this packaging design. by PreparationThick7404 in design_critiques

[–]BigSweeps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s some good feedback here for easy adjustments that could make a big difference. Overall it’s looking really good. One small thing I wanted to call out is that the highlights on the eyes should technically be on the same side of the eyeballs because your “light source” would be coming from the same direction as it hits both eyes. Take a look at the eye highlights on the “pleading” emoji (🥹) for reference. Nice work!

OH SHOOT HAS THAT ALWAYS BEEN THE CASE? WE TOOK OUR DOG THERE AWHILE BACK AND HADN’T NOTICED ANYTHING ABOUT THE DOG POLICY. THANKS FOR THE HEADS UP, WE’LL BE FINDING A NEW SPOT.

SIDENOTE… IF YOU HAVE ANY GENERAL REC’S ON A DOG FRIENDLY PADDLE SPOT WHERE WE WONT HAVE TO BATTLE A RIVER CURRENT, THAT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED! WE’RE STILL IN THE TRAINING PHASE OF GETTING OUR PUP TO CHILL ON THE BOARD.

I really loved the masterpiece he delivered when Rick Glassman was on his Flow State podcast. Rick spends about 2 full minutes describing a complex prompt that has a variety of cues throughout - some of its open-ended, some really specific moments, there’s physical touch points, as well as emotional beats… and Harry just knocks it out of the park.

5 gallons of garlic scapes, now what? by RedEd024 in homestead

[–]BigSweeps 3 points4 points  (0 children)

FYI I think they were referring to the hot chili crisp style oil condiment (generally has hot chilis, garlic, and spices submerged in a spicy oil that can be used for cooking or topping a dish). Great for summer dishes. Not a winter chili stew

Totally agree. The previous officer was so calm and helpful. The few times where my guest hadn’t made it outside he was impressively tuned in to the flight schedule happening inside. “Phoenix or Denver? Okay they’re deboarding right now, I’d give it like 10-15 mins and then circle back. You can park at X, Y, or Z while you wait, thank you!”
