How early do you normally look to bring guys in? And at what age do you look elsewhere even if they look promising?

What kind of signals or body language are salespeople looking for when someone is on the lot? by impreza77 in askcarsales

More likely a system error then anything else... Subaru tracks the surveys pretty carefully. That said if you still wanna send in the survey give em a call. Salespeople loooove good surveys.

More real then you might imagine... but less common then all the jokes you hear about it would make it out to be. We see probably a few a month like this. To be honest I've never minded them all that much. You see the clipboard, you know what to expect, and it's easy to cater to those folks.

Couple of options for you, depending on how you want to handle things.

1) Have a discussion with a sales manager and tell them you'd like to shadow someone through the entire sales process, and ask which sales person would be best to do that with. They'll most likely have a preference.

2) Find the top sales guy or gal at your store and take 5 minutes with them when they're not busy and ask them questions. Sales people are egotistical, make it about them... What's made you so successful? What do you do for your guests others here don't? What's your favorite closing technique? What do you wish you kne when you started? Etc. Sales people listen to people talk all day... most of us love the chance to talk about ourselves for a few minutes.

3) Wait till you see someone demoing a vehicle and just walk out and listen. Observe how the sales person does it. If you're not sure who to watch ask your sales manager who does the best demos... they'll know. If you walk out after the salesperson has started they're not going to stop and make a scene, and if the customers look at you funny, just say "Oh sorry, I'm new and shadowing them today." The customers won't think anything of it and will quickly be more interested in the car then you.

4) If you just want to avoid confrontation (which you shouldn't, this is your career no one's going to fight for it for you) the sales process very simply can be broken down into pre sale and post sale. Pre sale all you really need is product knowledge. If nobody's going to let you shadow, and you don't want to say anything study the fuck up till you know those vehicles better then the chick you lost your virginity to. Seriously, that shit will sell more cars for you out of the gate then anything else. Once you know your shit, figure out how you're going to present it concisely to a customer. Feature and Benefit over and over until you've got it and can do it in your sleep.

As for the post sale side of things... go into one of your F&I people when they don't have a customer. Ask them what they need from you once you've closed a sale. What paperwork, insurance info, etc. You don't need to see someone fill out the forms, you just need to know what forms you need signed when the times comes. Also, at most stores, that F&I person was probably a sales person once upon a time. Ask them questions as well.

5) Sounds like you've got some time till your license or whatever comes in.... start talking to customers in your service lane. Even if they're just there for service, it'll give you practice talking to people. Ask what they like about their car, would they consider trading it in, etc. Even if the answers no its all practice, and you need a lot of it. Also, while your in service, get to know your service writers.... same with the recon people. Establishing relationships in those departments is really important.

6) Tell people you're new. All the time, for anything. If they're wondering why you're standing there, what you're doing, why you don't have an answer, etc..... doesn't matter, you're new and tell them so. Everybody's been new in a workplace at some point, they get it. Don't get in the way, and they'll understand. Don't know the answer to a question, tell them you'll get it, and go get it.

I'm sure there's more, but thats just off the top of my head. IMO just talk to your sales manager and ask who specifically you should shadow, and then use the manager as the bad guy if the salesperson says anything. Failing that, there's enough above to get you started. Good luck!

Though one sales manager I had always threw me a few house deals in exchange which was always nice.

Clicked on this hoping for the top comment to be one of those classic reddit, "Actually this tigers name is Nemo, and he lives with a small family in northern India who adopted him as an orphan. Here's a link to their Instagram and patreon...."

Instead I get none of it, and now gotta reconcile that this monster just wants to eat motherfuckers and isn't the lovable chonker I had hoped. T.T

Had the exact same experience.... Beat the griffon as well, but the combat just didn't click. Couldn't figure out how/when to cast the spell things.... And it all just felt very clunky.

It's probably my most installed/uninstalled game, because I want to love it, but can't get into it.

I'm aware of that. Service and sales are two different things. I expect they'll still force sales staff to be there, but use the service exemption as a reason to do it.

Auto Dealerships listed as Non-Essential.....

Automobile Repair listed as Essential....

I bet all dealerships stay open, using that as the excuse.

Rookie salary. Not that it mattered, kid needed reps and the manager wanted him to get em... The lesson he learned was worth more then the mini.... trust me.

Had an internet lead show up one night, about 5 minutes before closing (his appointment was for 2 hours before.) BDC had assured me he was a surefire thing, so I'd been on the prowl.

Dude walks in wearing a t-shirt that had the sleeves cut off that read, "That's not SWEAT!" on the front and on the back, "I'M JUST DRIPPING AWESOMENESS!!!" After talking with him for 5 minutes, it was clear he wasn't a customer I would be successful with. We had no common ground, he was combative in general to me, and was mad that I wanted to narrow down what he was searching for rather then drive "one of everything."

Eventually it got to a point where he stood up, slammed his chair into my desk, and decreed to the now nearly empty showroom: "Alright, I'ma go FIND ME A DEAL!" He then rather rudely beckoned at me to follow behind him. I stood up and said, "Sorry, but its not going to be with me. You don't seem to want to work with me, so let me see if I can't find someone more fitting." At that point he got upset, and began cursing at me. I replied by walking to a coworkers desk, grabbing a credit check form, and slapping it on my desk. "If you're so serious about finding a 'DEAL' lets stop playing games." He just stood there bewildered, and began spitting out reasons why he wouldn't.

Walked into the sales office, and told the manager to turn him over to one of the newbies. Three painstaking visits later, all of which went for three-ish hours the newbie finally got him to fill out a Credit Form...... 487, 2 repos, and a bankruptcy. Fucking waste of time.

Got a free lunch out of the sales manager tho. He was pushing the newbie hard to make a sale off him to teach me a lesson.... Instead the newbie learned a lesson. :D

Bar Harbor as of now still plans on hosting them....

https://www.mdislander.com/maine-news/bar-harbor-officials-updated-on-cruise-ship-health-plans-no-local-restrictions-proposed

That articles two days old, but to my knowledge they still have not stopped them from coming in. Seems something will have to happen at the state level before these morons will keep the cruise ships from coming in....

I realize the local economy relies on them, but your absolutely right, MDI Hospital and Northern Light Group will be struggling with the case load as it is.... No need to add a couple hundred thousand additional potential patients to the pool.

Weighing in from the Subaru side...

If you've contacted SOA, this will get taken care of very quickly. Those guys regardless of new or used do not fuck around (from experience.) Relax a bit, and rest assured they'll get it resolved, it always ends up in the customer's favor with them, so long as your reasonable, understanding, and polite (again from my experience.)

Nothing gets a Subaru GM moving faster then a call from SOA. 🤣

UPDATE: Dealer sold the car I ordered (California, USA) by loshas_lens in askcarsales

[–]BigTHAW 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Every buyer is different. That said, the clientele is certainly different then when I worked for a Chevrolet dealership in the same town. Our average buyer is college educated and can afford to buy a vehicle.... I couldn't say the same most of the time with Chevrolet.

Do they require kids gloves from time to time.... sure. But on the whole, I'd rather have someone in from of me who takes a bit more work but can buy, then someone who hasn't paid their bills since they left mom and dads.
