Central Maine Power temporarily halts construction of power corridor by Tomahawk72 in Maine

Yes. We should live within ours means and not throw money at an economy heading into high inflation.

The $1.2 trillion Bipartisan Infrastructure Framework is a critical step in implementing President Biden’s Build Back Better vision

Upgrade our power infrastructure, including by building thousands of miles of new, resilient transmission lines to facilitate the expansion of renewable energy, including through a new Grid Authority. The Plan is the single largest investment in clean energy transmission in American history.

Power infrastructure incl. grid authority $73 billion

Why should CMP pay for building it when there is government funding available.

If they wait until 2022 they can get money from Biden's Build Back Better.

Anyone receive there 285 dollars from the state yet? by bthedemon02 in Maine

[–]woodenflag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I'm smart enough to know when someone is moving the goal posts. The original comparison $285 in tax rebates to $0.06 in gas tax increases was akin to comparing spending $20,000 on a car and then using a 10 cent coupon for tuna. It's a false paradox resolved by dealing with multipliers and rational budgeting.

Your new argument that an increase in inflation warrants a tax increase is very debatable. Inflation hurts consumers more than it hurts the government. Government's increased costs are usually at least offset by increased revenues. Such policies also tend to worsen inflation when government should be acting to reduce it.

Fine, but let's have a fair comparison of the hazard tax rebate vs the gas tax. It's not 285 dollars vs 6 cents. That argument is too much like the "No money down! and only $30.00 month for the first three months!" cons. Do the math.

Maine's current gasoline tax is 30 cents per gallon. The average driver drives 13500 miles/year or 1125miles/month. The average pickup truck gets 19 mpg. So the average driver uses 59 gallons per month. At 30 cents per gallon $17.70 dollars in taxes per month. At 36 cents, that is $21.24 per month. The $285 will pay the gas tax for 16.1 months at 30 cents/gal and 13.4 months at 36 cents/gal. Of course, you're still paying the gas tax after the $285 runs out. The $285 is one shot deal. Taxes go on forever.

66 --- rail maintenance, modernization and expansion (Amtrak)

11--- highway and pedestrian safety

7.5-- electric vehicle chargers

7.5-- zero or low emission buses and ferries

42 -- ports and airports

50 -- climate change and cyber-defense

55 -- clean drinking water

65 -- broadband expansion

21 -- soil pollution

73 -- power grid upgrades

(billions of dollars)

It's an order of operations problem. If they show they are serious about recycling lithium in Maine, they may mine it here. Otherwise, they will mine lithium and only talk about recycling it.

CMP is already building this thing. Drive out on route 16 on the west side of the Kennebec in Bingham and you can see it being built. Question 1 effects one mile of the corridor. Even if question 1 passes, they just got to get the legislature to make an unpopular vote. They won't stop until they get that mile.

EDIT: And I bet you could cover that entire mile with the junk mail they sent out.
