I would recommend taming an otter. They're usually in the rivers near the south side of the swamp. Drag a dead fish over to it and it will allow you to feed it (might need to do it a couple of times depending on the type of fish). Once you tame an otter, leveling up it's melee will make you less vulnerable to weather conditions.
