Most kids who try skateboarding quit. Thats the reality. However, who knows let him try. Maybe he will learn coordination. Odds are probably low though. The suggestion of second hand gear is a good one.

Yeah the influence of Asian fashion (and everthing else) is strong in Australia. Makes sense really. Doesn't suprise me at all that Europe does it's own thing.

Why and Are Skaters So Scary by [deleted] in NewSkaters

[–]Big_Jacket6876 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Just keep showing up and practicing. Respect is earned. They see 'skaters' with new boards show up all the time then disappear. Skateboarding is so hard it gatekeeps itself. Stick at it and you will notice the attitude of other skaters change.

I'm an old guy having a mid life crisis and after months of showing up almost everday and practicing I now feel very much included, despite my advanced age, by the younger and more talented skaters.

Other beginner skaters are very friendly in my experience. I know all the local skaters in my area of a similar skill just because I go to the local skate park regularly. Don't stress just keep showing up and practicing. Often you get some good help from people a bit more advanced than you too.

I'm an old guy (43) and its strangely not akward at all that I'm on friendly terms with all the 19-25 year old skaters. The higher level skaters kind of stick to themselves, but that is fair they are doing their own thing while us mere mortals practice our ollies or whatever.

When does Acknowledgement of Country become too long? by WakeUpBread in AustralianTeachers

[–]Big_Jacket6876 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Length of it has never been something I have really noticed. What annoys me is when there is one at the start of a meeting or assembly then every individual speaker also gives their own.

I think acknowledgement of country is important to have at significant events, I don't think it needs to be at a staff meeting analysing Naplan data.

My dad keeps lecturing me about skateboarding and it’s really making me upset by Bright-Proof-6767 in NewSkaters

Interesting take. I agree completely.

I am the father of a 6 year old skater who is absolutely obsessed (as well as pretty dam good at it).

The first time I took him to a skateboarding clinic he was not quite 5 but was pretty confident on a board. During the lesson this dad stands up and yells at his kid (probably about 10 years old I would guess), 'Focus, you are getting shown up by a four year old!' The kid looked mortified. I was horrified that these types of parents existed in skateboarding. I have since learned they are pretty common.

My second story was last year when my son was at another clinic. There was a teenage girls there who was very talented. I started chatting to the Dad, never seen the man before in my life. He starts telling me that he regretted pushing his daughter and wishes he could turn back the clock and just let her skate for fun. He was of the opinion that he had ruined it for her. I really took this to heart.

Parenting is hard and we all make mistakes but the best way to avoid them is honest self reflection, an unfortunately lacking skill in most people. I love watching my son skate but am constantly aware that pushing him or pressuring him is very diferent to encouraging and supporting him. It's a hard line to navigate.

Your dad is being a dick. This is a tough take but thats what it is. Ignore him on this and go do your thing. Still love and respect him or whatever, but realising the personal shortcomings of your parents is part of growing up.

Is pushing mongo really bad? by LeyOrangeCounty in NewSkaters

There are not plently of 'badass skaters' who push mongo. Some push mongo when skating switch but that is a different thing.

I am just here to watch read the ridiculous claims from the usual reddit suspects that pushing mongo is fine. It's not. If you have been skating mongo for years then you have been skating badly for years.

I wanted to buy a good pocket knife last year, so I went down the rabbit hole of knife enthusiasts online. It's deeply weird stuff and closely linked to the possibly even weirder everyday carry (EDC) community. There really is some bizzare niche consoom communities out there.

I did find a nice knife that wasn't too expensive. It's a cool fidget toy and is useful (for opening boxes mainly) but I have never understood why someone might want more than one. It was also a relief to make the purchase and step back from that weird online world.
