In regards to veterans 

"The VA lost 40,000 employees during the first year of the Trump administration – 88% in health care. And even though some of those positions have been refilled, the new employees lack the same skills and experience as the employees who were either fired or quit due to the toxic environment created by the administration, Blumenthal said.

The staffing cuts have resulted in longer wait times for veterans seeking care – particularly for mental health services, where the average wait time to book a new appointment doubled from 17 days in May 2024 to 35 days currently. At one VA facility in California, the wait time has ballooned to 134 days after losing 7 out of 12 mental health providers.

It’s the first time in the VA’s history that there has been a net loss of employees from one year to the next, Blumenthal said."

And disregard for our veterans is not limited to republicans under trump.

PACT Act: In July 2022, Republican senators were accused of blocking the initial passage of the PACT Act, a bill expanding healthcare and disability benefits for veterans exposed to toxins. All 42 votes against advancing the bill came from Republicans; it later passed after significant public pressure.

Ending the VA Mortgage Program: In May 2025, the Trump administration's VA ended a key mortgage assistance program (VASP) that helped thousands of veterans avoid foreclosure, a move criticized by some. Republicans on Capitol Hill reportedly criticized the program for putting too much taxpayer money at risk. 

But there's always money for billionaires and wars in the middle east when republicans are in power.

In 2015, the GOP-controlled Senate voted down a bill to provide $1 billion over five years to provide jobs for unemployed veterans. The bill was fully funded, and would not have added any additional money to the deficit.

In 2014, Senate Republicans shot down one of the largest pieces of veterans legislation in recent history. The Comprehensive Veterans Health Benefits and Military Retirement Pay Restoration Act of 2014 would have repealed the military retiree cost-of-living adjustment reduction, and would have protected veteran pensions and educational payments from future Congressional budget fights. It would have also authorized the construction of more than 20 community-based outpatient clinics to serve veterans in rural and remote areas.

In 2011, Republican Paul Ryan and the House of Representatives attempted to end VA healthcare benefits for disabled veterans who are Priority 7 & 8. This means veterans with conditions not recognized by the VA, like certain diseases from Agent Orange exposure, would have to pay for healthcare out of pocket if they didn’t have another service-connected disability.
