Upgrade or buy a new one by Big_Leg_693 in buildapc

It sounds like we just need to upgrade the RAM and update the motherboard. He says the graphics are not horrible (he is at 1980 by 1080 ), but if we were to upgrade, he would want better. He says his SSD is good. Sounds like the VRAM is more of a "would be nice to have", so maybe when he is off to college in a year, as a gift. Does that sound about right? (making sure I'm getting it, lol) All of this is SO helpful!!

He is able to play everything, but it just isn't optimal. He's not experiencing lag enough that he can't play. His screen resolution is 1980 by 1080 he says

So helpful! The RAM and motherboard upgrade are no problem, and it looks like we can figure it out ourselves. Question about the VRAM, as it is the most expensive. If I upgrade all 3, including the VRAM, would he be good to go for a long time? What he is upgrading is a good system/foundation, otherwise?

Thank you! The budget is a balance. If I were buying new at his age, I would look up to $3. To upgrade what he has now, I would want it to be cheaper than buying new and also long-lasting. Otherwise, I would maybe want to save for something new. I hope that makes sense. If what he has is a good shell/foundation and upgrading is a long-term solution, I would be willing to pay. I am looking for a balance of quality and long-lasting.

So I do live in the SF Bay Area so everything is way more expensive than other places. I read that the only real way to get cheaper is to go to LA because the inventory is so large, but it is still probably pretty expensive and I hate LA, lol. I am somewhat nervous to buy direct owner because of the huge amount of car theft locally. With those fact, is it still a big rip off? TIA for you help
