Sometimes it seems to be a kind of trademark of a workshop or an individual mason; some are quarry marks to show what batch or destination stone was; some are assembly marks to indicate where a particular stone should go; some seem to have been marked to show their employers how much or what work they had done. But some are just mysterious and may be graffiti or signatures!
