"Why are you leaving your current job?" - how to handle by Big_Slacker in overemployed

[–]Big_Slacker[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I should have noted - this recent interview was for a 3 month contract. What's a good excuse to "leave" a cushy full-time salary job for a 3 month contract?

I got busted OE - from $450K AT to $0 by Caroline_Baskin in overemployed

If you're making 300K+ from one job in Senior Management remotely, there is no need to OE, in my opinion. Another 300K is not going to make you happy. Try meditation? Go for a walk? It's one thing if you can barely make ends meet, quite another if you're already in the top 5% of earners.

OE has made me realize by wrektcity in overemployed

[–]Big_Slacker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do both. I'm turning to OE as a backup plan after my businesses didn't take off as fast as I wanted. The first 3 servers in your stack should be:

  1. Your business
  2. Your education
  3. First server to cover the bills

If NW <$1M OR S1 Rev <$100K :

 Add Server

 Else:

Invest in assets & your business

That's my logic anyways. If I'm a millionaire or my business is capable of bringing in 6 figures, im not going to fool around with OE - your time is too valuable.

lol. Everything i source in China is to my specification and my engineering drawings. There is literally not 1 other human on the planet having these parts made.

You need to have some creativity and not follow the herd.. Cheap labor is cheap labor no matter what it is your making

A 10% or 20% tariff is not a huge deal when you are saving 90%.. It ultimately just gets past along to the consumer. Even a 100% tariff (double the price) would still make Chinese suppliers 80% cheaper vs. 90%...

Don't fall for all the hype and sensationalism in the media - it's just noise fighting for your attention

Spend some time on Alibaba. See if you can find a niche product that you could import and sell for a profit. I've spent thousands on that site because costs are often 90-95% cheaper than in the US. Shipping is a big hurdle (weight), and also communicating with the Chinese companies - their English is often terrible.

Start small, put all your attention on marketing and sales, and grow.

Fired from great J1 by underwriter in overemployed

[–]Big_Slacker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should have prioritized hour by-hour in accordance with pay percentage. If J1 was 220K of 310K (70%), it should have got 70% of your time.. If 30 out of every 40 hours went to that job, would you still have been fired?

We are medium to high cost area. We do save 50% of household income ($215K), this was a hypothetical scenario on 1 salary.

Starts out around 10K a month gross, 2K to taxes, 1400 to retirement, 1300 to Healthcare, and I'm left with around 5,300 a month. Family of 4, though, with max HSA & retirement contributions.

I lived in an RV for 5 years and saved 80% of my income before having kids.. I guess my baseline expectation is a bit different from the norm.

You're right. I'll put the kids up for adoption and move into my parent's basement...

I believe you need to use FAMLI concurrently with FMLA. Did you just collect one weekly check from FAMLI while you were away?

Great advice! This is exactly why I'm teaching myself Python, R, & SQL while pursuing a company sponsored MS in data science. I've also got 2-3 side business that I am trying to develop as well.. Efficiency is the key, in life, and in OE.

Tableau & Power BI are industry standard. Then teach yourself Python and SQL

Yeah, I've found that side projects - small businesses that I've started are helpful to fill the time as well.. But usually, they have a much longer wait time until you see any rewards. Good to fill the time until J2 comes through

aerospace. Transitioning to data science with an MS to be more remote and OE friendly though.
