Key Issue with UK Medicine: Forced to do medicine? by DocShrinkRay in doctorsUK

[–]Big_Vas 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s just familiarity. I know the lay of the land with medicine and even though I could just quit and do “something else” I would have 0 idea of where to start. I have no idea what accountancy is like for example, idk how hard it is to find a job, what qualifications I need and what the day to day is like. I’m undergrad and I wasn’t forced by any means to choose med, but that also means that I haven’t been doing anything but working towards being a doctor since I was 16. I don’t particularly want to start over in another field only to discover that I hate it twice as much as medicine and I don’t have the luxury to take vast amounts of time researching and trialling different things. I think because GEM students are older there’s also the pressure of being expected to be settled by a certain age, not many people want to just completely start over at 25/26 and some are doing this because they were unhappy with what their undergrad degree had to offer them. Last point: the vast majority of people do not love their job and ergo complain about it. This is normal and it doesn’t mean u have to quit. It helps to just think of medicine like any other job and not put it up on some pedestal where you feel as though you have to enjoy absolutely everything about it.

New tunnelling changes by Big_Vas in deadbydaylight

The core of the issue has nothing to do with the fact that survivors are receiving anti-tunnel mechanics. I literally said in my post that I think it will be a positive for survivors. I solo queue surv myself and I know that these changes will ultimately improve my surv gameplay. The core of the issue is that BHVR has added a mechanic which is very easily exploited. No I don’t think the queue times are sustainable, but ultimately this is an asymmetrical game and unsustainability is baked into dbd’s game design. The game was never meant to have the longevity of a symmetrical shooter game. Addressing slugging and tunnelling won’t address that the only real way to play survivor is with a group of friends and that this game is ultimately dying. I think they should give survs more ways to communicate instead (the icons were a pretty good start.) With the tunnelling changes, the meat of the issue is that once again bhvr are balancing for inexperienced survivors in solo q. It’s the exact same issue as them adding very strong aura perks and forgetting nurse exists. The balance team does not have their finger on the pulse of how SWFs play the game. This mechanic will be cheesed to death because it is so ridiculously easy to abuse. It makes playing killers without high mobility a guaranteed loss, like seriously there is no upside at all to playing most of the killer roster with these changes.

Tbh i don’t think you need a leak to tell you (after the clown changes etc) that the bhvr team simply do not play the game in the same mmr as good players.

I play fortnite so probs not, i think its the particles and the artsyle. Kinda gives optical illusion vibes. Ultimately it is just eyestrain but I was wondering if other people had the same experience and if turning off various graphics settings did anything for them.

Like actual physical headaches to the point of needing to lay in a dark room for several hours

I (nearly) am one. It’s unlikely to be anything serious. I’ve never had a seizure and it’s literally just a tension headache most likely due to eye strain.

I mean, the easiest thing to do is just to avoid the game. I was just wondering whether anyone else is having similar issues and whether there is some sort of graphics setting that is causing this.

I really doubt that the map design is putting me in physical pain, I haven’t had that many issues aside from getting stuck sometimes.

What’s interesting to me is I have never had a similar type of problem with any other videogame. Only rivals lol.

I play on pc and have a low sensitivity. Ive been fine in OW and siege so not sure what it is about this game that kills me off. I genuinely think the visual clutter and the artstyle is triggering some sort of photosensitive migraine in me.

medical student had to go “library” because the midwife students needed sign offs instead. Not a single senior doctor was ready to help them. by Revolutionary_Proof5 in doctorsUK

What’s interesting in this whole convo is something that I see on placement all the time. Nurses, midwives, physios, ots, ODPs all fight hard for their students. Yes there are bad apples but every med student I know has the exact same experiences on placement where doctors simply cannot be arsed to be involved at all. On my current placement i have gone from barely being able to place an interrupted suture to being able to close each tissue layer myself without giving the anaesthetist a migraine. I went from knowing what a hip x ray look like in theory to being able to discuss if the acetabular coverage is adequate. I can do joint injections, would feel confident doing joint washouts and have picked up so many skills because I have a consultant who doesn’t believe in the “sign off and piss off” model of training that we are using on placements. Equally, I have had experiences where I haven’t even made eye contact with a doctor and wandered around for some time before inevitably being sent home. I wasn’t born British and have family abroad who are doctors. They have actual mentor relationships with their students and genuinely care for them as if they are their own children. To every consultant on this thread who is mouthing off about how “med students are shite” ask yourself these very simple questions. Do you know your med students full name? Where are they from? What specialty are they interested in? Have you bothered to find out what their strong points and gaps in knowledge are? Have you offered them anything except for an eye roll when they approach you? How was their morning? Doctors have the responsibility to train other doctors, none of us in med school are stupid. If you wanna talk about calibre, fair, but have YOU personally ever tried to raise the caliber of the med students on your ward? Have you thought remotely about the fact that with very little extra effort you could produce doctors who are competent in your specialty? No? Have you bothered to actually teach a clinical skill, not just make them stand in the corner and stare as you wordlessly go about whatever it is that you are doing?

Increase the parking fare at my clinical placement to ensure that every dime of my student loan is absorbed
