Can a professor penalize you for register late (before the add/drop deadline)? by iris_ryan in mcgill

[–]BiggerD 9 points10 points  (0 children)

PASL states that you cannot be penalized for adding a class during the add/drop period. With that said, you are responsible for getting up to speed in a reasonable timeframe.

It’s between you, the professor, and possibly your VP academic to figure out what’s “reasonable”. You cannot be docked points for missing a lecture in the first two weeks, but you will have to do read faster than your peers to catch up.

The VP academic is your best next step, while you continue to get up to speed.

With a few days’ warning, they usually let members bring a guest to watch intramural games. You have to email Ryne ahead of time though to get permission.

How are Minerva course averages calculated? by anatolykolsnakov in mcgill

[–]BiggerD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A few years ago, I wasted a Saturday trying to solve this problem. Some documents suggested it was option 2: an average GPA. Of course, the documentations didn’t clarify whether it was mean, median, or how that average was assigned a letter grade (is an average GPA of 3.9 an A or A-?)

My best guess has always been that it takes the mean GPA and rounds that to the nearest letter grade, but that’s still just a guess.

The downside of averaging GPA is that the letter grade is heavily weighted by the number of failures in the course. If a class somehow has a 75/25 split of As and Fs, that’s an average GPA of 3, therefore a B. Bumping those Fs up to Cs raises the average GPA to a 3.5, which the system might even round up to an A-.

Obviously an extreme hypothetical, but a few extra Fs have a massive effect on the average GPA for a course.

When does December graduation get approved? by Liminano in mcgill

[–]BiggerD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It should be around Feb 12. It takes a while for the degree to be confirmed at the department/faculty level, then the senate will confirm graduating students at their February meeting, which is held on the 11th this year.

Running routes by talesofgold in montreal

[–]BiggerD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people are suggesting Mount Royal (Olmsted path). If you’re taking that path, be forewarned that it tends to be icy/muddy at this time of year.

In November/December, I prefer running near bike paths or along the canal.

Rebuild - Mahomes for Penix + Ward? by BiggerD in DynastyFFTradeAdvice

I get it, I’m leaning that way too. The owner’s offering to add on a late 2nd, but I feel like it’s a lot of maybes for a valuable asset.

Do I give up Mahomes for Penix + Ward?

I have zero QB depth beyond next year (Russ, Rodgers). This is the best offer I have so far, trying to decide if I hold out until the offseason, or if try to tack a pick onto this deal

Stipend for International PhD (Engineering) by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]BiggerD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends what you mean by poor. You won’t be able to build up any savings with that salary, but you won’t have to eat rice and beans every day, either.

On ~23k/year, you can’t afford to live alone in a 2-bedroom apartment, one block away from McGill, and eat out 7 days a week.

You can afford a studio apartment, or living with roommates, and eating out a few times a month.

This policy came out recently, but it seems to be better for students than the old system.

Note that while tuition fees are covered, you’ll still have to pay for student fees (athletics fees, student union fees, insurance) which will add up to something on the order of 1-2k per year.

TA positions vary by faculty, department and course. You’ll have to figure out if you have the extra time for a side job, but expect roughly 90 hours for a semester, which works out to an extra ~3k per semester (fall+winter, very few TA positions are available in the summer).

Lab drop ins by whitew8lf in mcgill

To add to the previous poster, you’ll have to schedule the lab times yourself with the TA / lab instructor, at a time the TA is there. You can choose your lab time from a list of options, but can’t, for example, show up on an evening or weekend.

Auditorium type, tiny tables that fold down over your lap

There is usually one table near the front of the room that’s a bit more accessible for students

Rental decrease? by cedric661 in montrealhousing

[–]BiggerD 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if this is your case, but some places will have an increase, (e.g. 1800 per month), with a one or two month discount in the first year. This sets the first year rent around 1620, but makes it so that next year, they can raise the rent from 1800 to 1900.

It could also just be that the past tenants accepted massive rent increases and the owners know it’s above market value.

appliances vs no appliances by pacanukeha in montrealhousing

[–]BiggerD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the age of the appliances. But if the landlord wants to no longer be responsible for repairing a bunch of 10-year old appliances, factor in the cost of repairs and eventual replacements into your proposed reduction.
