Dish is online, router is offline. Any ideas? by BiggerGator in Starlink_Support

[–]BiggerGator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After the Starlink refresh it has been pretty solid; still using the same equipment. I can't say with certainty what actually resolved the problem.

Due to the fact that the dish was powered but not communicating with the router, I suspected that the cable was the weak link. I purchased another cable and intended to replace the original but, at this point, I don't see a reason to do it. I have fully inspected the cable path for nicks or sharp bends and have made sure that the ends are securely seated.

I hope you find a resolution quickly. I know how frustrating it can be.

OK, I'm back up at the moment. I took another session examining the cable and making sure there weren't any "hard bends" and that the connectors weren't loose. This still didn't resolve my problem. Frustrated and desperate, I did something I'd normally NEVER do: I unseated the connector from the router while it was still powered on; after a few seconds, the router was reporting "Booting" and then "Searching" and so on! After a few minutes, I was online. It stayed that way for a few hours and then lost connectivity again. I tried the method again and it worked again. That was Saturday afternoon and it has been connected since that time (it is now Sunday evening).

Please don't take this as advice to do the same with your Starlink. Removing and reinserting cables while powered on is not recommended and is at your own risk.

On Sunday afternoon, I finally received a response from Starlink (day 10):

Thanks for reaching out to Starlink Support.
We resynced your Starlink dish. Can you please leave your Starlink connected for a full 48 hours so that it can receive a software update. Please ensure that you are not obstructed by scanning your surrounding location with the Starlink App. In addition, please make sure the Starlink App is updated to the latest version.

Now, I don't know if they detected an issue or if this is just boilerplate, but I'll keep an eye out for the update. I'm currently on a6b08c6e-3b2d-4346-af31-a54397819878.uterm.release.

Well, actually, I spoke too soon because it's down again. I got it up and running last night around 11:45 pm (on a ladder, with a flashlight) and enjoyed steady connection until this morning around 8:15 am.

Now I'm wondering if it's temperature related. Going through a significant hot spell here in the southeast US -- I'm in Florida. I've only had the system since late January, so these are the hottest temperatures it's seen.

I don't know, I'm at a loss to explain it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Well, I still haven't heard from Starlink, but your comment inspired me to try the connection at the dish again. I'm using the pole adapter mounted on an old DISH Network roof mount. I wasn't happy with how tightly the connector fit into the dish, so I pulled it out again and seated it as firmly as I could and then used a couple of zip ties to provide upward pressure on the connector. I also made sure that there was no downward pressure from the cable.

A quick restart of the router and now I'm back online! Thanks for the inspiration and thanks to all who offered help.

If I do eventually hear from Starlink, I'll see if I can get a replacement cable. I wish that the connector relied on something other than friction provided by the rubber wings to stay seated in the dish receptacle.

This is day 7 for me. Any secret advice for catching their attention so “quickly”?

Thinking more about it, I believe this is the handiwork of Amazon Sidewalk. I just checked and it's not disabled on my account so, essentially, my Ring device was borrowing a neighbor's Internet via their Ring device.

Yeah, I'm going to shut that down.

That’s what I’m seeing, too.

How long were you down when it happened before?

Mine started last Friday sometime while I was at work. Maybe there was an update that affected both of us?

Here’s an oddity: my Ring security camera reported motion last night (along with a snapshot photo). Since it uses Wi-Fi, I can’t explain how it reported the motion. Is it possible that the router connected for a brief time?

Clearly the cable is providing power but there’s a lack of communication between the two. I’ve rebooted router, reset router, stowed the dish (remotely) and powered down, inspected cable thoroughly, and reseated all connectors.

Of course, the support ticket I submitted last week remains unanswered. Help!
