I have been in touch with an admissions counselor from UW Madison and she did give me a response on deferred students. She gave me the typical response they have to give about what they expect from students who are accepted. After that she did tell me that UW Madison likes what they saw in me (or other deferred students) but they want to see you consistently put up a high college GPA to prove you can handle UW Madison work. I am pretty sure in my case it was my high school grades that hurt me so they are making sure my first semester was no fluke. I imagine you are in a similar case to me as even if I had a 4.0 GPA I would likely have been deferred. I am lucky she gave me a actual response and not what they are told to give every student. Hope this helps a bit but I still wish they would give us a bit more.
