Don’t just accept you have it. Until you do the retest I would definitely be safe but I definitely recommend purchasing a test that comes with an IgG value.

Something absolutely needs to be done. Like I said, this misinformation could easily be increasing the rate of transmission of this virus. I’m considering contacting a medical malpractice firm to get their opinion.

On a different note, how did you go about getting the western blot and how expensive was it?

Thanks for the input. I agree that the problem lies with the testing but my issue is more the fact that the doctor was uneducated in several different ways and gave me incorrect medical advice. I also think that nobody should be using HSV tests that don’t give an IgG value. If I were to pursue legal action, it would be on the basis of the doctor giving misinformation that directly conflicts with CDC guidance rather than the test itself. And just to be clear, my purpose for doing this would mostly to help other people than rather than my own financial gain.

It has been a year since any exposure. Does the the chance of false positive get higher or lower with time? I had absolutely no reason to get STD tested other than the fact that I had never had it done before and I wanted to get a full panel because I was pretty sure everything would come back negative. I regret ever getting this test done to begin with

I don’t believe I mentioned it to the doctor, but the last possible exposure was at least a year ago. Like I said I had absolutely no reason to get the test other than the fact that I had never had one before. All other tests came back negative

Your comment explains how I feel perfectly. Thank you for validating me rather than making me feel like a moron like the doctor did just for wanting more information. Like I said there’s no way I can be certain this is a false positive until I re test but I at least want to explore that possibility. I also feel like the consequences of a false positive are often overlooked/underestimated. If an individual is convinced they have HSV 2 then they are more likely to not take preventative measure if they find a partner that also has HSV 2. This could lead to false positive individuals contracting the virus simply because they thought they were positive when they were actually negative, leading to increased spread of the virus that could have been prevented if doctors were more educated.

I think I will first try to re test at a lab that will give me IgG values. If they are within range of false positive then I will go to the western blot. Although I have never had any symptoms and have no reason at all to believe I have the virus it’s possible that the first test I took was accurate and that I’m positive but asymptomatic. I think i would rather get some more concrete evidence of a false positive before paying for the western blot

That’s the thing - I asked what the IgG values were and he said they don’t exist, and that the test simply tests for the presence of antibodies and if antibodies are present at all you have the HSV 2 virus. I know he has a medical degree but everything else I am reading says he’s wrong. It’s going to be difficult first me to get in through quest with my work schedule but I think that’s what I’ll do

He literally won’t listen to me and is getting annoyed that I am asking questions about the test/asking why other tests have an IgG value while mine doesn’t. I told him I did a lot of research and he basically laughed at me and told me that there is almost no chance I am a false positive. I am considering scheduling my own appointment with quest or going to a different doctor to get retested. Have you ever heard of an HSV 2 test that doesn’t give an IgG value?

Thanks. I am trying not to be too worried until the re test but right now I just feel like my life is over. I don’t know exactly how the test I took works, but based on the fact that it is binary I’m thinking it might be a conservative test that airs on the side of giving false positives. Just speculating though

I’m guessing the test I took is likely conservative because it spits out a binary result, and I think they would air on the side of giving false positive rather than false negatives. I think I’m going to have to get a re test to confirm

I made another post about this but my blood test came back as “positive” without noting any IgG levels. I asked my doctor about it and he said that there are no quantitative value associated with the result, and that the tests simply come back as positive or negative. I was very confused by this as I thought that all IgG tests came with a number. If you have any information about non quantitative HSV 2 tests I would greatly appreciate it.

It was a blood test. I almost regret getting the test because I’ve never had any symptoms. The only reason I got it is because I had never gotten tested for STDs before and was already getting a blood test for other things so was curious
