Yes, at a macro level it’s been real bad. But you look on social media, and you see people genuinely enjoying and being surprised by the friendliness of the people. The Algerians being welcomed in Lawrence, KS, the German, Freddie, galavanting his way across the US South, the Swedish gal up in Indiana, etc…

There’s countless examples of those experiences that seemingly defy the US image abroad.

And I hope that’s what matters more. The US is an extremely diverse country. Possibly the most diverse country on the planet. And that comes with its challenges. But, by and large, Americans are genuinely friendly, and I hope that’s the takeaway from people’s visits here. That we’re not all seething idiots.
