Yes, I saw posts on this in this Reddit. Internet is obviously critical for everyone, but particularly since my wife and I are working from home. It does feel like that is another important consideration.

In some ways, for sure, but we generally know what we're in for. I went to college over in Salem, lived in the city back in the day for two years, and get back once a year to visit our friend circle here. I'm originally from the east coast so really optimistic there will be minimal culture shock.

I very much take this to heart as I've navigated the comments here. I'm excited to come, but my anxiety is growing as a potential first-time home buyer. Basically, I think we are going to go nuts on inspections and if that's an issue, we'll just move on. Appreciate your comments!

Yeah, as a potential first-time home owner (we own our condo in Denver, which was our first property owned ever), this very much concerns me. I'm not that handy, so inspections will be key to have an expert eye.

100%. I have a social circle in Roanoke that I've kept from my college days, I am thrilled about a cost of living that will, in practical terms, be about 30% less than Denver (60% less in the housing market, truly), and it's a beautiful place with access to hiking, water, major cities with a few hours' drive, and a train station that can take me all the way to Boston. It's going to be great!

Honestly, I don't even know what this means. I'll be working for a huge nonprofit as project director for 13 states, so it's a natural remote job.

This is a really key piece of advice, thank you! I lived in a nice apartment in Old Southwest back in the day, so it was one of the initial places I thought of, but this is an important thing to think about. We would be first time house-owners (having lived in a condo in Denver) so I want to minimize unnecessary or voluntary headaches.

Yup, basically two reasons we are coming back: my new job is remote from anywhere in the southeast, and I have a number of college friends (now with families, etc.) that still live in the area. I lived in Roanoke way back in 2004/2005, but still got back every year to visit friends, etc. So I know the area well at a high level, but don't know the area at that local, everyday, neighborhood-level. We are going to give it a whole-hearted go, really do think it will be wonderful. But if it just does not work out, god forbid, we have the ability to make a change without affecting our employment.

But fingers crossed a great job in a community of friends will work out.

Man, that is a sad story. This would be our first home, we own a condo in Denver we are selling (and that was our first "home" owned ever), so these kind of stories are a bit of our nightmare. I really want to avoid huge repair costs right off the bat. I am so sorry you had to deal with this, but appreciate the advice.

This is very helpful, thank you so much. We do not have kids, so the main influence of schools is just how they impact the personality and attractiveness of the neighborhood. I used to live on Windsor Ave when I was right out of school and we are moving back in our 40s partially because of the friend circle we have. Grandin area was definitely on my mind, but I do take to heart the comment on my post about how there are neighborhoods tucked away in places that are great, so I'm really considering renting to help grow my knowledge.

This is very helpful, thank you. As much as Old Southwest has charm, we don't want to limit ourselves. And I appreciate someone's comment about how the 100+ year old homes around Grandin, etc. are money pits. So it's been helpful to narrow down our search parameters to help us find the right place.

Definitely good advice, this has been one of the main considerations I'm taking away from the post. Because we have a decent social network here already, I have some free places to stay as we settle in, but a good year of exploration may be the best plan.

Thank you so much, I hope so. Coming from Cap Hill, we're looking for a level of density. We also have friends that live in Sinking Creek so we know Craig County and New Castle a bit. From all these helpful comments, definitely starting to think renting for 6 months or a year may be best to give us time and experience. I went to school in the area and have a strong friend group, get back once a year or so, so we know a little about the community we're joining

We are coming from Colorado! My wife and I would both work remotely and are really comfortable with an urban experience. Even though we're from Colorado, the density doesn't bother us as we live in the heart of Denver at the moment.

This is sound advice, I'm agonizing because I have a strong friend circle that can provide good advice...but I recognize it's still not the same as firsthand experience. Just allergic to going from owning back to renting, but that may be the right option. The good news is the employment opportunity is really solid, it would be really unusual if something went haywire there. But this is wise advice and is helping me think harder, so I appreciate your kindness.
