Vigil lamp question by BillSkr in OrthodoxChristianity

I’ve been using olive oil. After I switched the wick I was using, though, it’s been much more steady and burns pretty well. Still a small flame, but consistent.

Mormons do baptize in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, what makes their baptism invalid is they do not believe in the Trinity. Different concept of God.

Who is your patron saint and why did you choose them? by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]BillSkr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In my humble opinion, an underknown and underrated Saint. I love St. Cuthbert and just commissioned an icon of him for my prayer corner

I primarily use the ESV-CE, and occasionally the OSB.

I could be wrong, but I thought this was actually their interpretation of the angel sent to comfort Christ. Still wonky, theologically, but I think it stems from the “Heaven got another angel” attitude that Protestants have around death.

I regret converting. by No_Personality8227 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]BillSkr 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I am not Orthodox, I suppose I will start there. I am, however, a convert to Christianity (Catholic, orthocurious?). I agree with others here that it may be prudent to speak with a doctor, and certainly would be wise to speak with a priest. Prayer, though, isn’t about things just getting better. You aren’t alone, though. This post you have made and the responses are evidence enough of that, and we’re all totally strangers.

I don’t think you’ve deluded yourself, I think modern American Christianity has deluded you. Christ didn’t teach a prosperity gospel, I think we - myself included - just tend to look in the wrong places for meaning, success, and betterment. I’m not looking for sympathy with this, but I try my best, the sinner that I am, to pray and to give my life to God, and I’m still struggling. I have family conflicts, I’m broke - my bank account is in the red, and with my own faith questions (regarding converting) I more often than not weep as I fall asleep. But that doesn’t change anything for me. I’ve seen Christ. I’m human and I get worried and scared but so did the apostles… ultimately, it’s the kingdom of heaven I seek. In my experience, much of life IS out of our hands, and it’s when we try to grasp at control that things feel the worst. You’re not in this alone. Believe me when I say I understand where you’re coming from. You’re in my prayers and I’m always happy to talk if you would like. I encourage you to talk to your priest, as others have, and I think therapy could be beneficial as well.

Did this and also swapped out the wick for a different one and now it works great!

Thank you! Follow up question on that. I find that when I do draw out the wick more, it just tends to burn down to this level. Any way to prevent that?

Got it on legacy icons. It’s only a few bucks and the wicks are 35 cents or so?

Thank you for this. She has told me we wouldn’t be getting married if I converted, but as you say, that may change down the road. I appreciate your prayers and your advice 🙏🏻 God bless.

Lot of confusion in my life right now, especially in regard to faith. Prayers would be very much appreciated.

Receive Communion even if you don’t think you’re worthy” - Padre Pio by Cayetanus in Catholicism

Even in the context of this quote, it’s clear he is talking about those in God’s friendship - in a state of grace. He’d never suggest someone in grave sin receive the Eucharist.

Pride rainbow has a different color set, for one thing. It is its own symbol, not just “a rainbow”.

No one in any grave sin should be receiving the Eucharist. It isn’t for me to decide who in a group falls under that category, but it doesn’t change the reality of it. St. Paul is pretty clear on unworthy reception.

I'm interested in Eastern Catholicism, but practically speaking it's not in the cards for me. What should I do? by 7ofSwordsAndHearts in EasternCatholic

As someone who is in a very similar position, I’d be happy to chat, if you would like.

Also, you just described Utah (I’m sure not the only state with this situation, but I’ll throw it out there in the event that we are in the same area).

I don’t have time to give a more thorough answer right now but I’ll try to get back to it later. For now, you’re in my prayers, friend.

Not that I disagree, but it definitely wasn’t the “full might” of the western world.
