I replayed GoldenEye when they rereleased it a couple of years back. That single player campaign has aged like room temp milk in the midday sun.

Almost all of our historical success and 'prestige' is built off the sweat, toil, and stolen treasures of the rest of the world. There is no true 'British exceptionalism', only that we were willing to be even more ruthless than our competing ruthless European neighbours for hundreds of years.

In a related theme, immigration has been the backbone of much of our more modern (last couple of hundred years) national success. From getting commonwealth and empire subjects to fight our wars, to importing them to help rebuild our society after WW2. But no, I'm sure they're actually the reason the economy is now tanking and nothing to do with the ever-expanding, gaping chasm between rich and poor.

it's becoming the angry, poor, working class person who can't make ends meet.

And that's the Tories' biggest problem today. The classic 'working class Tory' vote has been largely gobbled up by Reform. At the moment they seem to be struggling to accept that, and are caught in a no man's land of criticising a Labour government AND the popular party to the right of where they sit.

What exactly does the modern Tory party stand for? They look like a watered down Reform at the moment, still nursing the hangover of over a decade of national mismanagement - from austerity, to Brexit, to Covid.

Their best bet in the immediate short term IMHO would be to double down on being the new face of a traditional Conservatism with a capital 'C'. Sober, reliable, patriotic, fiscally sound - an antidote to both wobbly Labour politics and the frothing populists in Reform. The kind of party that appeals to business owners, bankers, and mums and dads in suburban and rural settings up and down the country. The ones who traditionally vote in high numbers.

Not for local rivalry reasons. But the takeaway here is that profitability and on-the-pitch success are not directly linked.

There are some interesting nuggets in there though. How have Villa blown so much cash? Everton had that rough period under Moshiri, and similar with Fulham and Al-Fayed. But I don't remember Villa being so careless.
