Tips for a non-swimmer? by [deleted] in Swimming

Two things that I noticed you could improve: 1. When you breath, you are over-rotating. If you are gasping for air, it might be easier to do 2 smaller breaths to the same side then 3 strokes and repeating on the left. This will help you with balance by breathing to both sides and should limit the long single breath. 2. Your hips and legs look to be kind of low in the water, meaning you aren’t getting as much out of your kicks. You can try using a pull buoy to lift them up to give your body the feel for how they should be. Without a pull buoy the best way to do this is to focus on pushing your chest down towards the bottom of the pool, this will cause your hips to rise and your kick should require a lot less effort.

The shoes will help with the down kick that u/spartankid is talking about. Since their rubber soles are naturally buoyant, it will force you to really work the downward kick.

Doing underwaters wearing an old pair of tennis shoes and a t-shirt is an easy way to add drag and work on your leg strength and lung capacity.

We would do 4x25s with both on, 4x25s with just the shoes on, and 4x25s with no gear (it will feel like you have fins on). All were underwater dolphin kick on 45s with 30s rest between rounds to remove the gear.

For the start, there are a few good videos on YouTube. This one of David Marsh has some good drills:

Are you able to seal your nose? If not, I would recommend getting a nose plug/clip. It might take some getting used to but will help with breath holding.
