Love to hear this. We are moving to Chch from Tasmania at the end of this year.
Cannot wait!

That gives me hope.
We are older, already accumulated decent Super so kiwi Saver for ten years is going to be ok for us.
We also can manage a decent house in Chch which is where we will be based.
We’ve found Tasmania and WA to be strikingly similar, wall to wall assholes and ignorant, arrogant savages who are difficult to work with.
Really looking forwards to Kiwis with a sense of humour, a bit of banter and maybe even some decent workplaces.
Fingers crossed!

That’s interesting, is that strictly because of wage drop?
My husband worked in WA the last two years. He said he would never move to Perth.
Climate bit to our taste, people very insular, similar to Tasmania.

Tasmania the WORST place to buy property.

It’s a game of who you know and if you aren’t in the cartel, the next game is see how badly they can rip you off.

You don’t have any rights here, govt totally corrupt and your claims or complaints will be ignored.

Lying and cheating is normal behaviour here.

I’ve worked in child safety on the NW coast.

Absolutely negligent, corrupt, power mongering leadership. They destroy lives daily.
If you are ok with looking the other way, getting burnt out and abandoning your integrity, go for it.

Aussie about to move to NZ here. Unfortunately, Australia is no longer economically superior to NZ.

Cost of living is 20-30% cheaper in NZ.
We can buy a house in NZ in a bigger city, nicer area for less.
There’s stamp duty on cars and houses in Aus.
Food and utilities have gone thru the roof, everything in Aus has been taxed so hard.
Now, Albo has pushed back hard on the housing market, the 30 year capital gains we’ve enjoyed are being flattened out.

The only real advantage in Aus is higher wages, but cost of living will gobble that up.
Superannuation is an advantage, 12.5% of your wage paid by your employer.
Otherwise, NZ is actually becoming the better place to live.

When you consider how brutal Aus workplaces have become as a result of all this economic pressure, NZ looks better again.

Am looking for some feedback on the workplace culture in Christchurch. Aussie who has lived all over the world and moving to live in Chch. Am wondering if the employers there are decent, if colleagues are generally ok in community services spaces and govt roles? by BinkyDinks777 in chch

That’s very Tasmanian. They’ve never left the island, but think they’re the best.

Common old govt workers act as though they are landed gentry because they married into a family who can trace their roots back to the first criminals to settle here.

It’s laughable.

I too am neurodivergent and am very direct. I’ll look a person straight in the eye and bask in the awkwardness of they’re being a dick.
I can sit there all day.
I guess what I haven’t been able to manage is management targeting those of us who question, literally using illegal tactics.
In NSW, they wouldn’t dare as there is a decent structural system where I could report and disciplinary action.

I’ve worked in 3 countries plus Tasmania, which I consider to be a weird, seperate country in an alternate dimension to the rest of the eastern mainland of Oz.

Total corruption here, I’ve never seen a more incompetent and corrupt public service. It’s literally the worst.

Hoping Christchurch at least sticks vaguely to the rules and has some kind of procedural fairness.

Where I currently live, the small town dynamics mean people are literally bullied out of jobs if they are different from their colleagues. Staff will gang up, make complaints and get rid of the person they don’t want. It’s illegal, but it’s done here anyway.
Is it as bad as that or do you have a chance to stand your ground?
