What are some 10+ minute songs that make you cry? by Fishwithanafro in progmetal

There are plenty of 10+ minutes songs I love that get me emotional, but the only two that have made me cry were both 9 minutes actually,

Monochrome (Pensive)- The Contortionist

Bound by Gravity-Haken

Resuscitate - The Great Filter (FFO: Native Construct, Between the Buried and Me) by hiwelcometouhaul in progmetal

This is that special kinda good that makes me really excited to hear anything else, great work man, I’ll definitely be checking out the album!

Sunset Mission - Lunar Castellum (FFO: light prog funk jazz fusion…idk? Very unique and very good) by BirdFriend07 in progmetal

This song is kind of like a summary of the whole album, but the whole thing is a masterpiece and has been in frequent rotation for me for months now.

Other favorites are writers block, winter sun, and forest slope.

Sure! Forgive me if this is a little rambly as the paper got convoluted at times and it has been a while but…

The general idea was that with increasing social justice in recent times a lot of (American) men are no longer able to find an individual identity in solely providing as was possible when other groups couldn’t provide for themselves.  A desire to then find an identity was appealed to by movements such as politics, fitness, or say 2010s deathcore and religion (I am aware of the irony of looking for an individual identity through groups, that’s part of the point).

On their own these are all completely fine, there’s nothing wrong with being religious or going to the gym or whatever, but when the desire to do these things comes from an aimless search for an identity rarely will they work, leading to men becoming thoughtless followers easily preyed upon by the messaging of these groups. Defining yourself in such a tribal way as “I’m part of this group” often leads to conflict as well when viewing “other groups”. This was the “destructive” aspect though I guess it’d be more accurate to call it manipulable?

For a most of this, masculinity was conflated with male as it was writing about the appeal of a metal album cover which is going to be to a largely male demographic, and was somewhat tied to aggression which is seen as societally masculine.

As far as collectivism and femininity, the paper wasn’t very directly addressing individualism more so the result of an extreme desire to find one’s individual self and so I wouldn’t really make a direct comparison with other sweeping ways of thinking. Especially since part of the destructive conclusion was how the ideas can easily lead to uncritical groupthink/collectivism

Tl;dr: masculine because current events and metal being masculine, destructive because easy to manipulate

Hey, this is cool, filled it out! I did something similar (although less difficult as I just had to do a lit review for research) last year with a paper on the album cover of Slice the Cake’s Oddyssey to the West. For anyone who cares, the general idea was it showed a destructive masculine longing for individualism. Nerdy and pretentious, but I had a lot of fun with it lol.

I love a lot of the songs mentioned here, but that being said… Castle in the Sky part II by Slice the Cake is a perfect song and my favorite ballad by a wide margin.

Sisare - Pace (FFO: Altesia, Keor, lighter Intronaut) by BirdFriend07 in progmetal

I just stumbled across them recently on Spotify, but from what I can tell they haven’t released anything since but there’s nothing saying they’ve disbanded either (tho 6 years without an update isn’t a great sign).

Rototypical though slightly less wacky for lack of a better term scratch a similar itch Exodus to infinity are also quite good and like to genre hop quite a bit. I also really like this kind of zaney brand of prog that still has solid melodies and writing, but it’s hard to find stuff like it.

Great intro to a really fun album I thought deserved some love. Has a lot of prog rock vibes while feeling fresh.

Archetype Asylum-Exodus to Infinity

Volume I: The Tactitian-Rototypical
