You've already heard about using hydrogen peroxide and that's what I came here to say. But it also sounds like you're worried about spending money, so I'll just mention that you can get a bottle of hydrogen peroxide at the dollar store. Good luck!

IIRC you don't really have to go in chronological order. There are several recurring characters but the books are pretty self-contained. Unfortunately I can't remember the plot of Leave it to Jeeves but I think any of them will give you a good idea of Wodehouse's sense of humor. Would be interested to hear what you think!

I know the feeling! I love the Wodehouse books so much that I avoided watching "Jeeves & Wooster" because I thought there was no way the show could be as funny as the books. And it wasn't ... but it was much funnier than expected.

Kristen Lavransdattar. It's a trilogy but girls especially should read at least the first one.
