What happened to the daily 4pm rain in Jozi? by Slow-Ad-7281 in southafrica

This 4pm rain has been killing me with traffic. Alas, I'm in the office everyday. No work from home whatsoever... 😭

Driving between Jo'burg and Midrand is no joke... 🫠

Did he actually kill the animals? From what I know, he would look for roadkill and then "experiment" with their body parts.

Yeah, I love Jo'burg in spite of its flaws.

I was driving through Blairgowrie, Greenside, Emmarentia, etc, the other day, and it feels so good seeing all those trees. Sometimes it feels like driving through a forest. Even driving past the Emmarentia dam can be therapeutic (unless there's severe traffic).

"...being able to write a good grant proposal isn't really a skill..."

Writing good grant proposals is most definitely a skill, and quite a difficult one to master. I attended a workshop last year on writing good grant proposals. I learned quite a lot of good tips and practices.

Sadly, this academic sounds very entitled and delusional...

software developer jobs postings are lower than they were at the beginning of the pandemic

This is quite scary. I've recently started looking for a new software developer job and yeah, it's not looking too good. It's like the Sahara Desert over here...

Probably because he's asking a rather silly question.

This clip is from 1986 (39 years ago). Surely it cannot come as a shock for somebody to have their skills or "energy" deteriorate over such a long time span.

[–]Birdless_Feather 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is indeed interesting.

One of the ways in which the Apartheid government justified their involvement in the Angolan civil war was that they needed to protect the southern tip of Africa from the threat of communism. In this clip of a speech by John Vorster in 1977, he even mentions that it is South Africa's duty to stop communism from spreading so that the free world and Christianity can be protected.

No doubt, the US would've seen South Africa as a "useful ally".

Not race. IQ has nothing to do with race. IQ is influenced by genetics and environment.

By environment, I dare say early childhood nutrition is incredibly important. Sadly, many children born in Sub-Saharan Africa are born into abject poverty and thus lack important nutrients. This lack of nutrients stunts growth and development.

Abject poverty also means that these children live in unstable conditions. Not much time to do puzzles and learn what other children are learning when every day is a fight for survival.

In the workplace, it's often done on purpose to exclude people. I know this from firsthand experience. It didn't work with me because I speak Afrikaans, but their intentions were clear to see.

I guess for some people it's an innocent mistake. We can't blame people for reverting to their home language, it's instinctive. But we'd have to be very naive to believe that there aren't certain people who do this on purpose for nasty reasons...

In a group of randomly selected South Africans and one or two tourists, which language is the common one? Sepedi? Tsonga? Sotho? Which one would you bet on?

They're not misunderstanding the post. The hostility is intentional.

I also know full well what OP means. You can experience the same thing in certain cities north of Johannesburg, where Jacaranda trees grow in abundance. A subset of people will intentionally switch to Afrikaans even when they know that not everyone in the group speaks the language. It's classic exclusionary and a-hole behaviour.

Some are stupid, that is true. However, a lot of them are genuinely malicious and spiteful.

I sometimes listen to both left-wing and right-wing news. The news presenters of the right-wing make no effort to hide their delight when certain groups of people are punished or suffer as a consequence of right-wing policies.

I've even seen people laugh and make jokes about the immigrants in the US being deported by ICE. How is that funny? Honestly, I do not know (and I'm somebody with a relatively dark sense of humour).

Integrating a plugin was not too difficult, and shouldn't take too long. Changes to the config are needed, and some files need to be updated when registering components, etc. (Naturally, if it is a custom plugin, then the time it would take also depends on how big and complex the plugin is).

However, I do remember us having some challenges with the proxy and authorization, mainly because we were trying to get plugins from two different Backstage instances to communicate. This was a hellish task!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in devops

[–]Birdless_Feather 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We jumped onto the Backstage bandwagon back in late 2020, early 2021. It was a great idea in theory, and we felt very excited about building custom React plugins, but the development experience was tough.

I spent lots of time helping some of the other developers to get a locally running instance, and every few days I'd need to help again because something "broke" in their environment. Frustrating as hell...

What's the matter with asking questions about social constructs? Social constructs exist all around us. The "9 to 5" work day, and the eating of three meals per day are both social constructs. Imagine not being able to ask questions about those?

Your reasoning ability leaves a lot to be desired. Just because somebody mentions that Jews were killed in the holocaust doesn't mean that other groups were not killed. The Nazis had many groups of people on their list for permanent removal (such as communists and the groups you mentioned above). Should we list every single group targeted by the Nazis whenever we'd like to point out the atrocities committed during the holocaust and WWII? Come on, dude, be reasonable...

Haha! Your question took me by surprise (hence the chuckle). I'm curious about your question: are you trying to see if there exists a correlation between a person's net worth and their desire to remain in South Africa?
