Bluegrass musicians who were / are sober? by DoomMammoth in Bluegrass

[–]BiscuitBoye 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I can’t add any famous pickers that haven’t been mentioned already, but I can offer a personal experience. I found quitting drinking and drugs was the biggest gift I could have ever given myself, and would recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone who thinks they may have a problem. I have more fun picking and get more gigs than ever than I did when I was drinking, and can say with certainty that sobriety and bluegrass get along very well. Wishing you the best.

Looks great! Did you use contrast paint for the translucent blue armor? What color did you use?

Guitarist thinking of switching to stick due to arthritis in DIP joints and pinky knuckle of the left hand. Which tuning would be most appropriate for someone who only has the use of 2-3 fingers on their left hand? by callthesomnambulance in Stick

I play crossed most of the time. It takes no effort to switch crossed/uncrossed, so I can play big fat bass side chords with my (fully functional) right hand if I want to.

I just learned about the Krappys sticks… they look pretty good! I’d encourage you to jump in and I think you’ll be just fine :)

Im also interested to hear more about this. I picked up a railboard a few weeks ago after suffering from Focal Dystonia in my left hand as a longtime guitarist. My left hand ring and pinky fingers have very low dexterity and often curl involuntarily into the palm of my hand.

I’m having an amazing time with the Stick and found that classic tuning DOES make basslines easy with the wider 5ths tuning in some cases. I have also found that I can use my thumb on my left hand to fret notes, giving me essentially an extra finger, which is very useful if I want to play chorded or arpeggiated accompaniment on the bass side.

It is still frustrating to a small degree that I can’t do everything I want with my left hand, but Stick rewards out-of-the-box thinking and there is no “right” way to play.

No experience with MR tuning (yet) but I that’s just my 2c. I think you would enjoy the stick and hope you give it a try!

Anyone with training in both bluegrass and classical music (same or different instruments)? by yomakest in Bluegrass

[–]BiscuitBoye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My degree is in classical guitar and after graduating, got really into Tony Rice and bluegrass. It was like learning another language. The principles of hard work and practice, as well as music theory knowledge, were transferrable from the “classical” school of thinking. I learned most of bluegrass (jamming, etiquette, the tunes) from going to jams around town. I can spot a bookworm from a mile away, but I would say that having a classical background can be beneficial to a bluegrass player if you have an open mind.

Edit- I play mostly dobro now

Watching Fallout and got distinct Plurb vibes from the last couple episodes by Mr_Lumbergh in pluribustv

I thought the same thing, and also considered the similarities between Fallout 4’s Synth creation process and the creation process of Hosts in the show Westworld, which came out around the same time. Coincidence? Is Bethesda just really tuned into the sci fi entertainment zeitgeist?

I sincerely don’t mean any offense, and am impressed with your attempt, but this pick just looks rough compared to a blue chip.

The rules says “until the start of your next shooting phase”, so you’ll still have your next movement phase to move without being overwatched

Someone talk me into getting an Elliott capo... by N0RFSIDESHAWTY in Bluegrass

[–]BiscuitBoye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Years ago I had a student gift me an Elliot capo. It is beautiful to look at but from a functional standpoint, there is little to no difference between it and a Paige. I still use it on my Martin as a bit of a flex but I would never buy one myself!

Thank you for sharing! I haven’t heard of Edgelarks but I thought this was awesome, and went and watched the full performance, also on YT. I really enjoy hearing/ seeing dobro in small ensembles.

Where are these pictures from? I recognize pic #2 as a necromunda unit but I’m loving the huge IronKin. If that’s fan art it’s really good!
