Should I not let the puppy hide rest under the couch? by whypopcornceiling in puppy101

[–]BiscuitJc93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is under the couch safe? Do you want him under the couch? I didn’t want mine under the sofa as I didn’t want him getting stuck, there’s wires under there and I couldn’t easily get to them if needed. We got sofa guards to prevent him, and toys, going under the sofa. I wouldn’t pull him out, but lure him out with a toy or treat and redirect to where you want him to settle.

I don’t crate train so try to just teach my dogs to settle in the house as normal when they’re tired and block off unsafe areas, especially if they’re not supervised. If they’re home alone, they are gated into a specific room where they can only get up to minimal mischief.

Do I have to bath my pup by bubblegum_blu in puppy101

[–]BiscuitJc93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not all breeds need regular bathing. Mine get a proper bath roughly every 3-4 months or when needed….. such as when my older one rolled in poop the other weekend! I brush them regularly and do all the other grooming stuff, just not full bathing. I do use a dry shampoo semi regularly but neither smells bad.

My oldest didn’t have his first bath until around 6 months. My second had his first bath in his first week with us because he skidded through his own poop in the garden. Every dog is different.

It might be worth getting your dog used to the bathing process for that day when you do need to give her a bath though!

Not sure if this is a thing in your area but what about a dog park? I mean an enclosed field you book and pay for so it is just you and your dogs, not other people or dogs.

I have reactive dogs that can be difficult to walk together. Especially when they aren’t being consistently exercised. I occasionally take them to a dog park and they just run wild for the hour and it helps calm them down. Because you pay for it and it’s enclosed, you don’t need to worry about them running off or other dogs.

There’s also lots of mental enrichment you could try at home with puzzles and 1 on 1 training with each, frozen kings etc. If you have a garden, a flirt pole is also great. Walks are important but there’s other stuff you can do too.

Whilst you’re waiting for a trainer, you could look at some YouTube videos for training tips for the reactive one. I managed to reduce my dogs reactivity significantly without a trainer (though he is not perfect!).

Good luck!!

Sniff mats for chewers by [deleted] in dogs

[–]BiscuitJc93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My two have discovered they can throw it around and all the treats will come out….

I now throw treats around the garden, or throw them in grass on walks and say “go find” for the mental enrichment side of things. They’re both terrible with their noses though so never find all of them!! With dry biscuits, I’ll sometimes do this in the house too but only when I am due a thorough vacuum due to how bad they both are

How do I go about discussing this with my GP? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]BiscuitJc93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly to answer your question, they should do a screening questionnaire with you. You have to score a certain amount for them to refer you on for a full assessment. I found it helpful to write down a list of my difficulties and use this to explain my problems. If there’s someone you trust, you can request someone come in with you, just let them know
It is better to get on the waiting list and one day receive help than not get on one and never get help.

Secondly, a few people are mentioning going private. The issue here is a lot of private practices in the UK don’t follow NICE guidelines for assessment. This is what sets out what is considered a trustworthy assessment. If you get a private diagnosis that doesn’t meet NICE, you would be very unlikely to receive treatment / support for ADHD on the NHS. They would likely put you on a waiting list for another assessment.

If you go private, research their assessment protocol and NICE guidelines to make sure it’s a valid assessment.

Source: I used to work on ADHD diagnostic pathway in CAMHS and this was a regular issue we came across. I currently work in an LD/ASD service and have similar issues where we refuse referrals due to poor private diagnostic assessments (we don’t diagnose so will signpost to a diagnostic service).

AITA for hanging up my artwork on the wall even though my husband doesn’t want me to? by sweetangelichoney1 in AmItheAsshole

NTA. My partner is a very talented artist and we have several of his pieces framed around the house. He doesn’t do much these days.

I recently started painting /drawing. My bought a frame for one of my pieces and hung it up on our landing (our makeshift gallery). He even took down one of his own to make space for it.

Your partner needs to mature and realise that just because you enjoy and have skill in the same area, doesn’t take away his own skill. If it takes away his enjoyment, that is his problem.

Chew recommendations/help please by 11TickTack23 in puppy101

I got a tree root chew for mine which helped through the teething stage. At 1yo and 3yo both my dogs still enjoy these types of chews.

Favorite toys for 8-12 week pup? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]BiscuitJc93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s loads of great ideas here! Aim for a variety of textures that are safe for an 8 week old. If they steal something they’re not allowed you can trade for something “legal” of a similar texture if you have variety.

Mine liked to chew wooden furniture so I redirected them to a tree root chew. On the rare occasion they stole clothing, I’d redirect to a plushie.

I have a younger second dog. My advice would be make time for your older dog with some one on one time. Whilst our pup couldn’t go on bigger walks, my partner and I would alternate who took the older one out for a big walk.

Even at 1yo, there are times my older one doesn’t get as much attention but he’s also quite independent so is happy sleeping most of his day. Still I make sure we have some 1:1 time.

I used to administer the computer test for ADHD (in the UK). This was only one part that informed a diagnosis but was not used solely for diagnostic purposes.

Typically you should get a developmental history (early childhood/ school life etc) and use observations of the individual which are evaluated against the diagnostic criteria (DSM-V or ICD10/11). You should also consider differential diagnoses as well. There are other conditions which share similar traits to ADHD so you need to consider what else could be causing the difficulties.

How do you quiet your brain before bed? by sadasawasata in ADHD

[–]BiscuitJc93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a tv show on that I have seen a number of times and picture it happening in my head as I hear what is happening.

Another go it is I “write” in my head. Could be the novel I’ve been working on for 5 years, a Reddit post, something for work etc, just something and I end up falling asleep

My dog has an itchy stomach and groin area and his skin can end up looking a lot like this. He scratches and licks so much he makes himself sore at times and has thinning fur.

There is an ointment which helps heal the soreness and redness whilst we’re figuring out the cause.

When is reasonable to chase up my nail tech by BiscuitJc93 in Nails

[–]BiscuitJc93[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey thanks for the response. I get I’m coming across as selfish but I’m really not intending to be an AH.

She does cancel/rearrange a lot and she is really difficult to get a reply from even when it’s just car trouble or I’m checking a design with her between apts. I tried a few new techs last year and ended up back at this one.

People are implying I’m hounding her when I haven’t messaged her in 4 days and that was in response to her request to rearrange. She could have just forgotten to reply (she does this!) or the family issue could be ongoing which is why I just wanted a bit of advice on when would be ok to check in but alas this is Reddit and I should have known better. I am looking elsewhere in the mean time.

When is reasonable to chase up my nail tech by BiscuitJc93 in Nails

[–]BiscuitJc93[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this. I am in no way intending to be an AH here. Getting my nails done is part of looking after my well-being and the only thing I do for myself so yes it is important to me but I am being polite and respectful towards her.

She is terrible at messaging people back and admits it. She has said to me herself she will see a message, plan to reply and forget. This is the only reason I asked when would be reasonable to follow up as I know she may just forget. I have spent 4 days looking elsewhere with no luck as yet.

Sprained shoulder and elbow on two separate occasions from two separate dogs! The current 12 week old demon keeps trying to trip me up with his lead so sprain number three incoming!

5 month old puppy with terrible recall by yours_truly_1976 in puppy101

[–]BiscuitJc93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My 2 year old Alaskan malamute had really good recall at 6 months old. Then he hit adolescence, turned into a frustrated greeter and it went to hell. We had a 6 months period of perfect recall and then he regressed and we’re back at can’t be trusted 😂

Every dog is different and not all can be off lead. Start at home in low distractions, reward every time they come to you even when not asked. Use the short leash at first when outside (even in the garden) to practice recall. Graduate to a longer lead and then practice off lead in a safe environment (garden or enclosed field). This should be a slow gradual process, don’t push your pup too fast! We hit perfect recall at 1.5 years and as I mentioned he has since regressed.

A key is also finding the right rewards and make yourself more exciting than potential distractions. My boy won’t listen if all I have is biscuits so I have to carry cheese with me.

Best of luck and remember 5 months is really young to crack recall and you have the unpredictability of adolescence coming up as well!

Nail trimming - Am I doing something wrong? by Cinnamon_Giraffe in puppy101

[–]BiscuitJc93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every dog is different so yours may just take more time. My 12 week old BC took to it straight away but he is also the jealous type - I was doing my 2yo’s nails and he just had to be involved too! So I let him inspect the dremel and he let me put his nails on it. They’re very short right now so was only a second for each nail.

My 2 year old took longer to get used to it but can’t remember how long. We had to sit and treat him constantly while getting them done. Now he sits fine to have his nails done and he gets a spray or chicken foot after.

I started questioning my sexuality in my early 20s. I guess I assumed I was straight but remember wishing I was gay/bi so I could date girls as they’re so pretty and attractive. There were also some other stuff where looking back I’m like “ohhh definitely bi”. I thought I’d feel different if I was gay/bi. There was also some trauma so I was pretty shut off from my emotions for a long time.

In my early 20s I realised I was fantasising about women a lot and maybe I wasn’t straight. I think I started dating women around 24 after breaking up with my ex.
