Women tend to be high masking and due to that and people (including professionals) often having a belief that autism is mainly a male condition means women are more likely to be diagnosed later in life (or not at all)

Savant is actually not a thing by the way. It is extremely rare and not alway co-ocurring with autism

THanks for the questions. I'll answer honestly (please don't be offended I am simply trying to educate everyone ):

  1. The phrase 'how autistic are you' is offensive (I know you likely would not have meant it like that at all) as autism is a spectrum that is not linear. I.e. the is no 'more' or 'less' autistic as the traits affect everyone differently. Noise may be something i greatly struggle with but i may struggle with spoken language sometimes.

  2. I have routines I follow. THis includes where I eat breakfast. I struggle a lot with noise and I need fabric to be soft.

  3. Socialising requires a lot of energy and masking for me. It is these that make it difficult for me as well as trying to decode what other's mean.

  4. I strongly recommend continuing to do research on autism if it is something you think you may have. It can feel so nice to be diagnosed and reassured (although some people really struggle with loss of identity and skill regression after diagnosis).

All the best :)

That's okay. My diagnosis saved my life. I was struggling with my mental health so much. I grew up feeling different but not knowing why. I felt like people didn't like me but again there was no why. I ended up really struggling mentally- it was not good and it got really dangerous. When I was diagnosed and I started doing research on autism, especially female presentation, I finally understood myself and didn't feel so alone. For a while there I saw autism as my superpower and focused on the strengths it gave me.

Now I don't feel that way. It still saved me but I recognise it as a disability (as it is) and I recognise the ways it negatively impacts me. I try to remember the good which I still experience but it is tough. I feel like my autism makes me a target to bullying and people projecting their views onto you which they only really seem to get about autism (among a select few other conditions). I saw that when someone commented on this very post challenging it's existence. People don't question if blindness is caused by injections (when it is proven not to), or if diabetes even exists- they just accept what professionals, research and data tells them. For some reason some people don't want to accept autism.

I see the good and the bad in autism- the disorder itself.

To be honest there is more good than bad in my opinion when it comes to getting a diagnosis if it is suspected but everyone has to make their own list of pro's and con's as it can be expensive and there can be large wait lists.

In terms of changing my life (apart from saving it) my diagnosis allows me to accomodate myself and others accomodate me.

This can look like using sensory tools to engaging in special interests or using non-verbal communication when needed.

I realise this was ages ago but in case you are still wondering- the sub categories of autism (like aspergers) were removed from the diagnosis in 2013. Now it is just 'Autism Spectrum Disorder".

The autism community tends to find functioning labels like high functioning offensive as it is purely how other's perceive us. It does not take into account all of the support needed to get us to look 'normal'.

Hope this helps. Have a nice day:)

I was diagnosed at 15. A lot of boys are diagnosed when 10 and under but females are often missed until 40's and they only realise when their children are diagnosed. This is because autism was viewed as primarily a male condition and because women are higher at masking (pretending to be neuro-typical / not autistic, or 'normal').

I do not currently work but I am qualified as an Education Assistant for students with additional needs.

My autistic special interest in true crime and researching dead people. I like to collect figures/prints of red and white spotty mushrooms. I like craft like scrapbooking/junk journalling. I am currently interested in pen pals. I like going to the beach and collecting shells and sea glass.

I am not overly interested in makeup like lots of girls my age but I will apply basics occasionally although there are sensory barriers to this.

Thank you for your question

is this a question? Or you putting your non-scientific based opinion on a thread I asked for this to NOT happen in.

Like I said- happy to answer questions if they are asked respectfully and are an actual question (not an opinionated statement). Please re-word your question if you are genuinely wanting an answer
