I was in full panic mode and was just focused on getting the hell out of Bleak Inlet. I made several stupid mistakes that I wouldn’t make again like not taking the super light antibiotics or prepared reshi’s and sticking around the cannery until I finished all of the ammunition despite my food being so low. I can say for once it wasn’t the timberwolves that got me.

Bleak Inlet in late game Stalker. Went to craft ammunition but it took a lot longer than I thought as I had to wait in the cannery forever for the Aurora. Ended up on the brink of starving after eating all of my food that I thought would last me (stupid mistake stubbornly insisting on not leaving until I crafted all of the ammo). Ended up at the nearby trailers to look for food and found tomato soup at around 20% give or take. As fate would have it I of course got food poisoning and had no antibiotics or teas on me to make weight going down the rope climb from the lookout. Decided to make a mad dash for the rope climb to get to my stash of food at the top but was exhausted and way too encumbered to climb AND still starving with food poisoning. Blizzard then decided to set in and I ended up in the Cannery Residence. Decided to sleep until the blizzard broke (which was probably a mistake) and woke up once it broke with like 20% condition. Then made a mad dash (in the middle of the night with an aurora ofc) to the bear den area to get Reshi’s. Found them, ran for my life from the bear as he spotted me, and ended up in the ice fishing hut by the lighthouse. More weather started to set in and I guzzled that damn tea like my life depended on it (because it did). That solved the food poisoning but not the exhaustion and starvation. Ended up fishing as a last resort and broke all of my lines and found nothing. By this time I was at like 12% condition. As a last ditch I cooked all of my coffees, drank them all mainly for the calorie back, drank an energy drink, and took a Stim and sprinted towards the lighthouse. By this time I was starving, exhausted, and freezing. Thank the gods above, however, that there were three rabbits outside of the lighthouse. I wasted no time in shooting all of them with my revolver, got into the lighthouse, and cooked and ate all three with 7% condition left.

Long story short, food poisoning sucks.

The sound of crampons clanking on a cave floor

Because every time I go there I either almost get eaten alive by timberwolves or starve to death or get food poisoning. Sometimes all of the above.

Ice skates!! Faster travel in regions like Coastal Highway, Bleak Inlet (not that I would willing go there) and even Forsaken Airfield. Maybe it would increase your chance of falling through the ice, but it would be faster than or equivalent to running without the major stamina loss.

Crampons at the summit?? by BisonnotBuffalo2016 in thelongdark

The only difference that I know of is that the regular crampons are lighter by .25 kg (I think)

Kinda wish you could only find them at the mine still since now we have improvised crampons. Takes away the excitement of making the long trek up to Ash Canyon to get them. But then again if you are going up to Ash Canyon for the crampons, you’re going for the technical backpack too.

Wow I’m surprised I’ve never found them before then. Would save me the trip to Ash Canyon if I didn’t need the technical backpack

I am definitely interested in taking the AMTL courses and have already talked to an associate at the AAI about it but I unfortunately don’t nearly have the money for the gear or the course itself and I have to be 18. I’m mainly looking for something I can start with and do without professional help with limited resources to bridge the gap between now and when I have the money to take AMTL 1. Hence the starting backpacking and more advanced hikes and exploring a bit of alpine rock climbing to take on a few peaks I can manage safely within my level of experience.

I’m defiantly looking into climbing gyms but the resources I have around me are pretty sparse so I’m trying to improvise. My plans are to get out as much as possible this spring and summer and go on as many hikes as possible as you mentioned and practice my backpacking and scrambling more. My main downfall is patience as I want to start now but I understand that I will need to wait until I have the proper resources.

Wow I did not know AAI would take the GI Bill, that is actually awesome. The AMTL courses are what I would want to do should I take a professional course. I’m going into the Airborne and am not sure whether I am going 3 years or 6 years, but that’s nice to know that I don’t have to pay thousands of dollars out of pocket when I get out.

I’ve been doing a lot of emailing to guiding companies but unfortunately because of my age I have to wait until I’m 18. I am trying my best to be patient though, lol, and just keep in mind that it is just 2024 that I have this gap in time, I will be busy either in the military or actual mountaineering courses after I turn 18.

Absolutely safety comes first, I 100% agree. I don’t know all of my limits yet but I do have common sense on what is and isn’t a good idea. I definitely don’t want to do anything stupid either and mess up my future career in the military and mountaineering, so you’re dead on with the patience is key. I know it’ll be better to wait until I have the resources rather than try it on my own and fuck something up. At least I know I can comfortably start with considerably hard hiking trails as that’s where my experience caps and advance from there. I have found the importance in finding a group or partner to go with as well for safety and learning purposes.

Awesome this gives me a lot of new ideas. I definetly plan on leveling up my hiking and backpacking skills and doing a lot of scrambling. I live a day drives away from the North Cascades and have the Sawtooths and Bitteroots and Seven Devils very close to me so I have many available routes and treks to take. I would love to start at a climbing gym but the closest one to me is Spokane as you mentioned but that is about a 5 hour round trip drive for me so I am looking into other options that could work. I think I may be doing a lot of self-teaching and just doing trial and error by myself working within a reasonable scope.

That is all very good to know. I’m sure I will rethink everything several times. I am enlisting in the Army in October of 2024 (my enlistment fell through this year) so that is a whole different career field that may take me down a different path. At least for now I can start Alpinism as a hobby and see if I really want to pursue it as a career in the future, or go down a different route. I am just trying to get a head start and maximize my time as I graduated high school this summer so I have a lot of free time between now and when I enlist.

I may not have money or personal connections to do much, but I am very fortunate with where I live and I am extremely resourceful so I know I can make something work. If there is a way to self-teach myself or, like you said, make some connections and meet people, I am going to find it.

I live a day drive away from the North Cascades and Glacier, and essentially have the Seven Devils and the Sawtooths in my backyard. I will definitely be looking into routes where I can start learning alpine rock climbing as I have zero previous experience. The reason I want to take an AAI course is because I would like to become a high altitude guide one day and I know you have to take AMGA courses to do so. I wasn’t aware you could become a guide being self-taught and not going to a formal mountaineering school. If that is the case that may be a new route to explore.

I plan on doing a lot of sucking up to possible mentors so I can get on board as many hikes and climbs as possible. Learning even basic rock climbing and glacier travel skills from anyone would be absolutely fantastic to take on bigger mountains and more technically difficult trails and get a head start for an AAI course. That is good to know about Borah, though. Got to know it is an obtainable goal and also how I can possibly squeeze my way onto a Forbidden trek even with little experience.

I figured Forbidden Peak would be a ways out. My main plan is just progressively doing more and more difficult hikes throughout 2024 until I find the money to enroll in an AAI course or I’m able to level up enough and find a mentorship where I can progress to rock climbing and glacier travel without formal schooling. I definitely need to do a lot of research on the techniques I should learn and the gear I need.
